I'd like to share this final anecdote about CNB with the TROJANS and Eers on this board, then I'm going to move on. After all, we have a coaching hire to speculate about.
The TROJANS reading this will have heard part of this but indulge me for a moment. I have a nephew who is the long snapper at Gardner-Webb university. He's a sophomore and played high school ball at Spain Park with our punter, Tyler Sumpter. He came to a specialist camp in TROY before his Sr year and would have really liked to have played ball here. Because we already had a long snapper in his signing class, there was no room for him... he might not have been offered anyway...but there was no room.
For you Eers who don't know, we had an offensive lineman named Corey McCullers who was killed in a car crash a couple of years ago. CNB named an award after Corey, our spirit award, given to the player who exhibits the most excitement and spirit on the sideline each game. This usually went to a non starter, scout team, or redshirt player, beacuase after all, the guys doing most of the playing are in squad huddles when they aren't on the field. This award has been given now each week for 2-3 years. Nice tribute right?
This past spring when the team received their conference championship rings, Corey's mother and dad received Corey's ring along with a hand written letter from Neal Brown explaining how Coery had earned that ring and how his parents should have it. That story made the rounds on social media, even got some ESPN.com coverage. My nephew, who sids't get to play at TROY with some of his HS teammates sent me a message with link to that story and wrote "Neal Brown gets it. He really gets it."
That's the kind of man UWV hired to lead their program. The kind of man who impresses a 20 year old that plays football at another school. You got a good one.
