Every day, at some point or some function, some place, South Alabama director of athletics Joel Erdmann will be asked The Question. "When is South Alabama going to build an on-campus football stadium?'' Usually he smiles and says he's not sure. Sometimes, he'll elaborate a bit more, maybe ask a few questions himself as to why the person would like to see the school build an on-campus stadium, perhaps ask if they would be more inclined to attend Jags game if that were the case. Most often though, Erdmann simply offers an "I'm not sure,'' answer to the question. After all, it's the truth. There remains a great deal of interest in South Alabama moving toward building a football stadium on campus, but there isn't a plan in place to make that a reality. "I've been the AD here for four and a half years and it unquestionably is the most prominent, frequent question that is asked and talked about, by far,'' Erdmann said. "I think it's fair to say, the status, where we are today, is this: everybody has an interest and an attraction to an on-campus stadium. I don't think I can find someone who would say, 'No, I'd rather we not have one.' "But it is at a place and time of being purely exploratory at best. It is discussed, but is it discussed in a formal nature? No, it is not. But when we play at other stadiums, do we look around at those stadiums? Sure we do. Quite simply, it is a question of money and a question of timing. There are no formal plans, but is it discussed. Is it thought about and is it desired? Sure.'' No South Alabama official has closed the door on the matter nor swung open the door of serious negotiations. So the question continues to be asked, and the answer continues to be, in a word, "Maybe.'' ( Full Article)
