I would stay with Sawyer Smith at QB. Barker is a better overall athlete, but Smith is a pure passer. Really throws the deep ball and has that cannon

And don't forget Watson, Free and Screws. I don't necessarily think any of the three will win the starting job, but I bet they push Barker and Smith.

Jacob Free will compete for the starting job. Watched his highlight videos, he might have the best arm, a bit less mobile then Barker though. However, great presence in the pocket and 6’5 tall, smart kid from Vanderbilt with Louisville and Memphis offers.

I’m gonna bet Barker and Free battle it out with Barker gaining the edge in his Sr year. That leaves Free 2 more seasons as the starter, Screws can gray shirt then red shirt and be ready when after graduates as we are on our 3rd new head coach by then.

We might have an embarrassment of riches at the position. Would hate to lose any of them, but a couple could transfer.

Sawyer will be the front runner. He played a great game last night, esp in the second half... Some more Jacob Free hs scouting info: School: Brantley (Brantley, Ala.) Key stats: 7,367 passing yards, 95 pass TDs, 19 INTs in career. Also considered: Louisville, Marshall, Memphis, Purdue, Troy, Temple, Western Kentucky. Impact: Free has a prototypical frame and strong arm for an SEC quarterback. His accuracy and decision-making improved as a senior, as he passed for 32 TDs and only four interceptions. Free also has above-average mobility, but he needs to work on his footwork in the passing game. sports.usatoday.com/2017/02/01/signing-day-2017-qb-jacob-free-vanderbilt-football/

Don’t think screws is grayshirting if he is already heading to campus and getting ready to practice according to him

Let the best qb start even if he is a true freshman. I trust the coaches but let's also remember that Levi Brown was 3rd string behind Jamie Hampton and Tanner Jones so sometimes they get it wrong. Some guys are game players others are practice All Americans

How boring it would be if we couldn't speculate who was playing where and when, as well as who we would play and when?

We had a 6" 7 qb with a strong arm once and he didn't do very well. We will see but imo we need a dual threat to make the offense in its current form click

What about the Screws kid? We should redshirt him. We now have three top contenders for the starting job + Watson. Sawyer is the front runner, Jacob Free is a top contender and Barker might be back for spring, but limited. I expect Sawyer to defend his starting job and Barker & Free will be no 2. However, Barker might redshirt and then transfer somewhere else for his final year of eligibility. Obviously, I want them all to be Trojans, but I doubt neither Sawyer/Barker nor Free would be ok with just being the back-up of the back-up. QBs transferring all the time nowadays: eu.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/columnist/dan-wolken/2018/12/25/quarterback-transfer-market-college-football-hottest-topic/2411579002/Why Sawyer? He is the most experienced of the bunch now and his deep bombs are very dangerous. He is mobile and everything else is just reps (intermediate passing). What about Free? I think he will challenge Sawyer in the next two years. We will have some new targets and who knows, maybe he will immediately connect with the new WRs and be the starter next year. Great arm, good accuracy, decision skills and nice presence but a little bit less mobile than Sawyer. He plays like a winner to me. Barker? The knee injury allowed Sawyer to pass by. Free is a top QB who could have played at Louisville, Memphis, Vanderbilt. Of course, I hope we can keep Barker here but he could decide to consider his options sometime next year.

We will see but imo we need a dual threat to make the offense in its current form click just because we had a tall QB in the past that didn’t start doesn’t predict the Free kids future. There is zero connection between the two. Free isn’t exactly slow. Levi was not a dual threat....

Sawyer passed Barker? I didn't realize fall practice had started. The difference in Barker and Smith is maturity. I love both but Barker imo is a lot more focused and disciplined. We are lucky to have both at Troy. Here is hoping for another competitive race which should make both of them much better!

But I have been big on Sawyer since his freshman year. I think KB redshirts, they said he tore his ACL his junior year in hs and they didn't know how good he was until he was campus. That makes me think he'll need the extra time to get back to full strength. But the new redshirt rule could be very helpful.
