Most of the bowl matchups are conference champs playing conference champs or the #2 two teams in the conference. If you're a p5 team you may be a #5or6 playing another 5or6 but it will most likely be in another p5 conference. (I know there are some g5-p5 matchups like UCF and LSU, but they aren't the norm.)
Since the G5 almost always plays another G5 and same with P5 it's sort of a playoff to determine who is the best G5 and P5 conference. What if the G5 conference champs played more P5 teams. Say the Sunbelt champ plays the South Carolina or Florida in the SEC or Penn St or Purdue in the Big 10 and the MAC champ plays NC State or Miami in the ACC. (there could be other similar matchups for the other conferences.)
I like #1 or 2 matchups between the G5 conferences because it shows where your conference is in relation to other G5 conferences. I'd also like to see more P5-G5 matchups to see how the G5 fares against the P5. But I think the P5 would feel threatened with just a possibility of losing to a G5 team so it will probably never happen unless forced to do so as in the case of UCF--LSU
