Overall this was a successful season and I never expected to beat App St without Willis and without healthy Douglas, Davis, B.Smith, etc anyways. 2018 Report Card and 2019 OutlookOFF: B-I expected more, but injuries and suspension showed that this offense only really works when we have many weapons available, otherwise we are just average at best. We need more depth and a real difference maker at WR and more RBs. At QB, S.Smith is maturing but I think he will be more like Brandon Silvers for us which is ok but if we want to be a Top 25 team and a NY6 bowl contender, we might need more than this. Next year with Barker and Smith both more experienced / BJ Smith and Frye returning and the OL only losing Crumitie - the OFF should be improved. However losing Willis, Douglas and Davis is just huge. We really need to add some JCs, transfers, and more depth because Eafford, Letton and Whittemore will not be able to replace Willis and Douglas right away. Adding Crowell and young guns like AJ Lewis and Demontrez Brown will benefit us in 2020 - but we need more targets now. DEF: AWe really have a great D - and despite losing Reese, Rookard, B.Brown, and Sanders, this D will be even better next year. This is a legit Top 25 Defense! All these guys will be back next year: Murray, Folsom, Martial, Webb, Hayes, Jones, Tyus, Sunderland, Knudsen, Nixon, Barker, Sailo, Choloh, Dunlap, Bridges, Clemons etc... and some talented younger guys. Also add current JC DT commit Dashawn Crawford who has offers from Kansas, USM, UAB, MTSU, Ark St. ST: B+So much improved from last year. Sumpter should be POY in my opinion, however return game was a bit disappointing this year. Sumpter will be here for a few more years! Recruiting outlook:We need to add more RBs and WRs. Currently we have some really talented kids considering us: Top 3-star RBs Larry McCammon (5-10, 199, Hoover), and Shadrick Byrd (5-9, 211, Thompson) are interested and even planning to visit soon. McCammon has offers from Iowa, Rutgers, Ole Miss and others, while Byrd has offers from North Carolina, Louisville, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, he will visit Troy on Dec 7. WR: Jamari Thrash (3-star) and DaShawn Owens (3-star) are interested and have us in their top 5. 247sports.com/college/troy/Season/2019-Football/Offers/Maybe we can bring in 1-2 transfers as well. Someone like Miami's Jeff Thomas would be huge: sports.yahoo.com/top-wr-jeff-thomas-dismissed-miami-hurricanes-football-team-214722930.html247sports.com/Player/Jeff-Thomas-35335/high-school-58368/Schedule outlook:
Quite favorable: Akron will have to replace 10 DEF starters, Missouri will lose its QB and some other starters, Southern Miss still young but returns a ton, they will be much improved. App State is very young and will be really tough, probably a Top 25 team. However, overall, I think we will lose max. 1 or 2 games next year.

It looks like our off week will be week 2 next year. I just looked at all of troy's opponents for next year. Unless the sunbelt can make some scheduling changes for us, all of our opponents have a game scheduled for week 2. Having an off week that early is going to wear on the team in October and November.

We need more playmakers on offense. Nobody scared anybody this year. BJ was great but wore down as the year rolled on. Finding a super mobile QB would help as well. Man, if we could only find another Kelvin Simmons out there.
Just reload on defense.

Good stuff. - How would grade the Coaching ? - Get the injuries and how they affect the team but there are 85 scholarships provided and we can assume these 85 are are all D-I talent. There are posts throughout this message board basically saying we can’t win because of them. Is there really that much of a talent gap between the 1 and 2’s at these few injuries spots that our games are unwinnable or the coaches can only call basic Pee Wee league plays or as poster says we should’nt expect to win anyway ?

Is there really that much of a talent gap between the 1 and 2’s at these few injuries spots that our games are unwinnable or the coaches can only call basic Pee Wee league plays or as poster says we should’nt expect to win anyway ? Coaching DEF AFront7 won some games for us and VK's adjustments are always spot on. Without Vic K we wouldn't be 9-3 this year, and Sumpter's ability to keep opponents away from our territory also benefits the DEF. OFF BCoach Brown mostly manages the game (clock). He limits turnovers, controlls time of possession, etc. From a statistic pov this will win you football games and he is right, we are 9-3 this year. It is unpopular and I don't like it either, but he is right. However, he can fully rely on our DEF. Also with all the injuries/suspensions we were quite limited. I think that we just lost too many weapons and this offense does not work without having most key targets available. Even CBs had to play at WR, this shows you how desperate we were in the last two games. Last year we had Thompson, McCormick, J.Johnson, Willis, Douglas, Davis, Eafford, Letton - also add Whittemore and Samuel to the mix - losing 3 to graduation, 2 to injuries, 2 to suspension and 2 being pretty banged up kills your entire offense + losing Barker at QB and Chunn / Anderson / Henderson at RB is not helping either, BJ Smith and Frye can only do so much. You can't just throw in a bunch of FR WRs and RBs late in the season if they are not ready. We def. need to find new targets, because most of these guys won't be around next year...

I just did a quick google search on the preseason predictions for this year. In the Sun Belt we were predicted to come in 2nd in the east behind App State. Overall we were projected to have 8.5 wins (avg from all prediction peeps). All of this was with a healthy team. With the roster that was presented prior to the season opener. As I’ve said 100 times, this coaching staff far exceeded the new expectations once Barker was hurt and all the other puzzle pieces started falling off the table.

We need more playmakers on offense. Nobody scared anybody this year. BJ was great but wore down as the year rolled on. Finding a super mobile QB would help as well. Man, if we could only find another Kelvin Simmons out there. Just reload on defense. Just getting a healthy Kaleb Barker back for next season would give me a better outlook. The offense just never "clicked" the same after he went down this season. Add a couple of your playmakers around him and we are there.

All things considered we haven't had that bad a year. I defy any other team to lose as many players as we did and still come out with 9 wins.
