You are absolutely wrong about this. Winning at LSU didn't WIN the team anything but victory. The Sun Belt wins and Bowl Win is what WON them their rings. Not the 15 minutes of fame we got for beating LSU. Which was promptly extinguished with a loss at home against South 11 days later.... So while winning at Nebraska would be big for the program, another 15 minutes of fame (maybe 20 this time) it 'wins' the team nothing, but for victory and confidence. 8 of the next 9 are what are most important. Most important to the team, the coaches, the staff, everyone except those out here on the sidelines wanting to feel more euphoric about a win in Lincoln than they would winning the Sun Belt Conference and representing the conference as its Champion. The rings were for the conference championship and not the bowl. Rings are given for winning bowl games also

Going to Bowl games and winning bowl games is great, but I bet if you asked every player on the Troy football team what was their biggest victory of the year last year, I think most would say the LSU victory...just saying...Winning against teams like LSU and winning against teams like Nebraska gives Troy more notoriety , more national exposure and generates more fan interest then any sunbelt bowl tie in game does. People are still talking about the Troy victory over LSU last year. I bet most people don't even remember or know who Troy played in their bowl game last year. Boom. This is spot on.

People are still talking about the Troy victory over LSU last year. I bet most people don't even remember or know who Troy played in their bowl game last year. Boom. This is spot on. Navarre is right about this. Kids want championships, to play for the prize at the end, not the desert in the middle. It is fans that want the big school victories, so they can walk around their office and feel proud and talk smack. I know, I am one of those fans. These kids, and I spoke with several about last season, and it was the entirety of it, not the first turn. They all felt that the South loss was much more emotionally devastating than the euphoria of beating LSU. They all talked about how they went down there with an attitude of being better than they were. To them it was expected. To us in the stands it was magical. Anyone can approach Coach Brown and ask him what the teams #1 goal is every year and it is to be Sun Belt Champions, first and foremost. So while winning at Nebraska would be huge, great exposure, brand blows up again and the entire Trojan Nations is on cloud nine, if we don't win our first road conference game in Monroe the next week, then it will be exactly like last year when losing to South, never to be heard from again. Now we are mentioned mostly as an afterthought. Win a game after a big game, then you are on the path to another level. We haven't done that yet in the Neal Brown era, but we are going to. Maybe this is the year.

A win against Nebraska would be far greater for the program than a win in the Cure Bowl over a team that nobody has heard of. Man, you need to think big, this small time thinking from fans is killing us ! 20 years from these players would still recall a victory over Nebraska, not a victory in the Cure Bowl in a crap stadium on ESPN 8. The Victory against Nebraska and LSU have done more for Troys program than multiple lower tier bowl games and SB championship. These kids are on cloud nine. Troy’s name has been mentioned thousands of time today. The country knows who Troy is because of LSU and Nebraska. The nation has no idea who the winner of the Cure Bowl was last year.

I agree, do we still talk about the 2007 FAU loss (most disappointing loss in Troy FBS history IMO) or rather the Mizzou and OK State wins?
Bowl wins are important but many G5 programs win their bowl games, more important is beating storied and ranked P5 programs (not many G5 programs beat LSU and Nebraska, some of them do, and some more beat programs such as Indiana and Iowa St).
However, even more important than the occasional upset would be consistent Top 25 appearances, IMO. Its harder to break into the Top 25 and stay there than upsetting a struggling P5 giant.
Anyways, we need to do all of this combined. When talking to recruits, we now can tell them that we go to bowl games, occasionally beat programs such as LSU and Nebraska and next step would be regular Top 25 appearances. We also have the facilities and top coaches now. The future is bright!
Next year could be our year. We might win all of our OOC games:
USM: The will be much improved, returning many starters, but we will also return a ton and its a home game. Mizzou: They will lose their QB and two starting WRs, 2 OLs, and some other starters. Akron: They will basically lose the entire defense to graduation (8 or 9 starters) but should return most on offense.

The OOC wins do more for recruiting / PR as well as payouts than our bowl games. Also attract a lot of regular students to campus. The way the FBS system is set up, does a 11-1 or 12-0 Troy get to a New Year's Six Bowl.? FBS needs a 16 team playoff with each conference winner plus wild cards, but this will never happen as it would create a seismic shift in College Football.

Yeah beating a big name does wonders, but Troy usually only gets 1 P5 team a season. It would be better, if a majority of SBC teams won their games against P5 teams. If the conference rises, then we get 10 more big games a year. Let's say App actually beat Penn State (They came close)... How much attention would the Troy vs App State game get? Lots. I pull for SBC anytime they play P5. Even GATA and SoBam.
