Come September 20th 2003 it will have been 15 years since Troy played Southeastern Louisiana. It was the inaugural game of the newly renovated Veterans Memorial Stadium. Some friends of mine and myself all decided to spend way more money than any of us had at the time and purchase one of the newly built luxury suites.
Man did we have fun for about 7 years!! We were all 30 and under and all Troy fans who liked to have a good time! We had a disco ball, laser lights and I even remember 1 game that turned into a foam party! Or was that the foam from inside all the bean bags!? We even had a celebrity guest list that a small man would find impressive! “Havin a good time” was what we named it and it was fitting! Hell...even LB use to come up after the games to hang out. However, I’m pretty sure admin ask him to stop after the first season😂. I dare say any box has ever or will ever party as hard as we did!
Anyway...I had been dating my girlfriend for about 5 years and decided I was ready to pop the question and couldn’t think of a better place than at a Troy game!
A good friend of mine(who was the orchestrator of the box) and I plotted out a plan so I could ask her at the first home game. btw...this plan came together on a Monday before the game! It was a very well thought out plan..or so we thought. It only took a committee of Janice Blakeney, Roger Shultz, Wes Allen, Sohail and the officials to make it happen!
First of all I had to have the ring overnighted to Larry the Legends house. Janice was so nice and agreed to stay home on Friday to sign for the package. Then we had a banner made that we planned to hold up in Doodle Harris’s box during the 1st timeout of the second quarter. At that point the tv crew(thanks to Roger Shultz) would pan the camera to the sign which would display on the Jumbotron and in the TVs in the boxes. All was a go and as the game entered the second quarter my wife needed to run to the bathroom. I wasn’t about to let her slip out so I had to recruit the help of Auburn’s legendary receiver Willie Gosha to help me run interference with my wife to keep her in the box.
Gosha use to come down to Troy in the late 90s and fill in on Pi Kapp team 2 flag football. Nobody knew who he was and we would run two or three plays then just send Gosha deep for a TD..every time! We were better than our team 1!
Sorry..back to the point. Gosha was able to help me keep her in the box. However as time wore down in the second quarter and no one had called a time out I was freaking out! This is when Sohail and somehow my future father in law made it to the sidelines to alert the officials of the situation. With time winding down in the 2nd quarter and looking like I wasn’t going to get my time out...low and behold we got an official timeout.
The camera zoomed on the banner and displayed it on the Jumbotron. I was able to grab her attention and have her look at the screen. After seeing it, she turned back around and I had dropped to one knee! With everyone looking on all around...She said yes!
Troy went on to win 28-0 and the following week we tore down the goal post against Marshall!
15 years and two crazy boys later, I have still managed to hang on to the best thing that ever happened to me!
Go Trojans!
