TROY – When a regional National Labor Relations Board judge ruled last week that Northwestern University football players can unionize, Troy athletics director John Hartwell did not support it. Hartwell, in an interview with the Dothan Eagle Saturday, said that he believes college football players should be awarded a stipend in addition to a scholarship, but unionization to accomplish that is unnecessary. “I think the cost of attendance (stipend) is coming sooner than later,” he said. “I am all for that because … as a student-athlete, it has really become a year-round deal between going to summer school and offseason workouts. “Your opportunities as a student athlete are limited in terms of outside employment. The cost-of-attendance to help students with necessities, travel home back and forth, things like that – I think there’s certainly some merit to that.” ( Full Article) sFi_lance

I completely agree with John Hartwell. It does seems as though some of these student athletes forget that they are there to get an education that will carry them through their lifetime. Look at the Troy players that returned yesterday for today. Less than 3% of those that returned are professional athletes. That means 97% took their degrees and made some kind of career out of it. Also the cost of the scholarship is higher than a lot of entry level jobs coming out of college. There are a lot of kids that make it to college on an athletic scholarship, that otherwise would never be able to attend college. Athletes have to understand that their playing career is 4 years in college. What they learn in the classroom those four years will provide for them through their lifetime.
I think this is a slippery slope that could be disastrous for a lot of universities.

I believe that players should be awarded a stipend (of some sort) in addition to a scholarship. The bigger problem is the ridiculous salaries that some coaches are being paid.

It's going to really hurt the little schools. Especially the ones who struggle to get their fans financially involved.
Big pay days for coaches are fueled by big money boosters that are willing to pay coaches, recruits, or players at their schools.
