If... IF... the men's basketball team winds up with a losing season and Phil Cunningham gets let go... I'd hope Troy would look into hiring Billy Kennedy at Texas A&M. It seems like he may be looking for a job soon. He's not meeting expectations at Texas A&M, even though he has a winning record and has taken them to the Sweet 16. He played for Maestri back in high school, and Maestri is currently an assistant on his coaching staff. Kennedy also coached at Murray State and Southeastern LA, where he took both programs to the NCAA Tournament, and led Murray State to a 31-5 record with an upset over #21 Vanderbilt in the NCAA Tournament.
If not Kennedy, how about Ray Harper at Jax State? How the Gamecocks lured him to Jacksonville, Alabama, I'll never know. He did pretty well at WKU. His first season at Jax State, they went 20-15 and went to the NCAA Tournament. Now in his second season, he's got them at 20-11. Jax State is even averaging a higher attendance in basketball than Troy this year...

Our tournament run last year probably earned him several more seasons with us.

Just so there is no confusion, I like Coach Cunningham.
I don't have any facts, but I would assume he got a new deal at the end of last season. We are not in financial shape to "let go" of anyone with a recent contract. I would assume he is safe unless we go 0-25 in the near future.

A reliable fact-sharer told me that the whole men's staff got contract extensions after last year. Years? Unknown to me.

Troy doesn't have the money to get rid of Cunningham. He signed a pretty sweet extension at the end of last year.

Regardless
h Kennedy would not take a job at an institution that has the same demographics that made it difficult to recruit to in the first place

2013-2014. 11-20 (6-12) 2014-2015. 10-19 (5-15) 2015-2016. 9-22 (4-16) 2016-2017. 22-15. (10-8) 2017-2018. 14-15. (8-8)
Coaching College Athletes, where you can literally fail and be so richly rewarded for it. Where it doesn’t matter if you succeed, it’s how good your agent is.
If our University literally can not afford to replace someone who is losing and failing due to how they structured their deal then they deserve the failing results that are recorded. It is just so unfortunate that we they alumni and supporters have to suffer for it.
And people wonder and can’t seem to comprehend why students are engaged and showing up.

students show up better than fans Our entire fan base should be ashamed to have such a nice arena with no one there to watch Sartain was more fun to watch basketball in If we want a winning team we need to show up and be a difference maker in close games - better crowds translates to two or 3 more wins every year - guarantee it

Maybe losing to Georgia Southwestern State and Austin Peay, and losing to ua'sb EVERY year could be making it hard to get people excited about the team.

I attended two games at Sartain years ago and never went back until Arena was open. Sartain reminded me of a 1950's gym. Do understand that I am NOT a TSU alum with sentimental ties to ANY of the old campus.

Great win over Georgia State - please note there were more than 10 fans in the building And more than a handful of Trojan Faithful at that! Disappointing loss for the Ladies, great second half performance by the Men of Troy! Whatever Coaches said at halftime worked. Varnado is a beast!!

We wouldn’t be talking about attendance if we had made even half the hire we got in Women’s Basketball. The Women’s team deserves far better attendance. You can blame NOBODY for not turning out for a Men’s game. Attendance will continue to struggle until we decide to properly invest in Basketball.

The team appeared lethargic and couldn't manage the ball. Shots failed to land as Troy, led for 18:16 of the game, but fell behind with 7:08 to play and made just two baskets over the next six minutes of action. Troy shot 41.6 percent (32-77) from the field, but made just 7 of 25 shots from 3-point range (28 percent). Free-throw % a paltry .636, and fell to a (8-20, 4-13) Sunbelt Team. Troy Ladies at Ga State tonight. Fire this Coach??
