The Troy women’s basketball team has won four of five games and will have to make history in order to continue the streak. The Trojans travel to WKU on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game at E.A. Diddle Arena, a place where Troy has never won in eight previous tries.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 and can be heard on WTBF 94.7 FM in Troy and on TroyTrojans.com for FREE. Live stats will be available through WKUSports.com. For live, in-game updates on Twitter, follow @troywomensbball.
Troy (8-13, 4-6) has won four of its last five games, with the lone loss coming in overtime at Texas State who is now in second place in the Sun Belt standings. The Trojans defeated South Alabama, 78-53, in their most recent game, last Thursday at Trojan Arena.
The 25-point win over the Jaguars tied for the third largest margin of victory for either team in the history of the 34-game series. Troy forced 27 South Alabama turnovers and used 30 points from Joanna Harden and 17 from Brooke Bowie to cruise to the win.
Harden scored her 1,000th career point in the game, becoming the 20th player in Troy history to do so. She is just the third to accomplish the feat in two seasons, and if the season ended today, her 19.4 career scoring average would be the second best in school history.
The senior guard still leads the Sun Belt and ranks fourth in the NCAA in scoring, averaging 25.4 points per game. She is over 8.0 points ahead of second place in the Sun Belt (18.0 ppg) and has scored 20-plus in seven straight games. Harden has scored 20-plus 17 times this season and 30-plus five times.
She paces a Troy offense that averages 80.2 points per game, still the best in the Sun Belt by more than 7.0 points over second place (73.0 ppg). In their last five games, the Trojans are averaging 83.0 points per game and giving up just 68.4 per game.
WKU (14-8, 6-5) is currently moving in the opposite direction with three straight losses. The Lady Toppers are coming off of a 58-51 setback at UALR on Saturday and have moved into a tie for fourth place in the league standings, just 1 1Ž2 games ahead of Troy.
Chastity Gooch leads the Lady Toppers on the season, averaging 17.5 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per game, ranking third and first in the Sun Belt, respectively.
WKU won this season’s first meeting, 86-69, at Trojan Arena against a Troy team that was in the midst of an eight-game losing streak at the time.
All-time, Troy is 1-15 against WK, including an 0-8 mark at E.A. Diddle Arena. The Lady Toppers have won the last nine meetings in the series, dating back to
Troy’s lone win which came in 2008-09 at Sartain Hall. For more information on Troy Athletics, visit TroyTrojans.com.
