Troy softball By Jeremy Wise jwise@dothaneagle.com There may not be a better way to christen a new softball facility than the way the Troy Trojans are doing theirs this week. Troy’s new softball field will see plenty of action starting Thursday with the home opener with Auburn – which will be opening the coach Clint Myers era that same game. The facility – complete with artificial turf in the outfield, new grandstands, dugouts and locker rooms -- will see even more action when the Trojans play host to the Troy Subway Invitational, a tournament that features 2012 national champion Alabama. Trojans head coach Melanie Davis has served as Troy’s head coach since the softball program’s inception, but she describes the opening of the new facility as the dawning of “a new era” in Troy softball. “ It’s beyond nice. You feel like a champion when you walk on that field,” she said. “You feel like you’re in the elite. “ (Fans are) gonna be amazed. It’s like the new basketball arena. When you walk in it, you say, ‘Am I really in Troy?’ It really has the “wow” factor. The “new era” Davis speaks of starts off with some great competition, beginning with Auburn at 3 p.m. Thursday.
