By Jeremy Wise jwise@dothaneagle.com Despite its best shooting performance of the year on Jan.9, the Troy Trojans still did not have a comfortable lead against Arkansas State in the latter stages of the game. Needing to drain some clock and/or score more points, Troy guard Jeff Mullahey fired a shot –and missed. He exploded and grabbed the loose ball, though, helping the Trojans burn another 15 seconds off the clock. Another miss. Another Mullahey offensive rebound. Eventually, a huge 98-84 road win for Troy against one of the Sun Belt Conference’s better squads. Last year, though, Mullahey may have never collected those rebounds. This year’s Mullahey, though, is healthy – and providing a spark for the Trojans. “A lot of (the improvement) has been my health,” he said. “I’m finally healthy, and I can be more aggressive.” Coming out of Pace (Fla.) High and Pensacola (Fla.) State College, Mullahey was never the key scorer, but he was as fundamental as they come, according to the numbers. At Pace, he averaged nine points, four rebounds and three assists per game. At Pensacola State, he tallied eight points, three rebounds and three assists per contest. But those numbers drastically dropped in his first season with Troy. Partially, it had to do with his role on veteran coach Don Maestri’s team, but a nagging ankle injury also hurt his performance, Mullahey said. “I chipped a little piece of a bone in my ankle, and it actually lodged in my Achilles tendon,” he said. “I didn’t have the explosiveness I usually had. My first step was slow.” ( Full Article) iconTroy3
