TROY – Sometimes, inspiration is a one-way avenue where history allows us to choose from heroes like Martin Luther King Jr. and George Washington without ever having the chance to encourage them. Sometimes, though, heroes walk among us, inspiring us to better things while providing us an opportunity not just to learn from them, but to cheer them on. That’s why this next sentence is fun to write: Troy soccer midfielder Kailani Decock returned to class this month after defeating cancer. “Walking around campus, everyone would come up to me and say, ‘Hey, we’re so glad you’re back. Your strength was inspiring.’ And I was like, ‘No, thank you, just thank you to everyone who supported me,’” Decock said in a Monday press conference. “My mom came down with me, and she said I didn’t wipe the smile off my face for the first three days. I was probably the only person that said, ‘Yeah! It’s class!’” Reacting to the most normal of things with a sense of excitement likely is a byproduct of going through some extremely extraordinary circumstances, even for a 21-year-old, in the last six months.
