Having played in those years, we had darn good athletes but you are ABSOLUTELY right, the administration DID NOT support football of baseball a lick. We won the baseball conference three of four years earning the right to the regional tournament but they refused to pay the $2,500.00 in '64 the trip would cost so after a great year we stayed home and someone else took our place. Getting back to football, we played very competitive with every team we played for 3 quarters except Howard (Sanford) and Bobby Bowden and his team of SEC graduates were something else.....but they should have been, they were playing years 5-6 of college football. We were the only team that had its players still playing BOTH WAYS because there was not enough money from the administration to give more scholarships to be able to platoon. Players just couldn't last 4 quarters with teams that platooned. That's what, over 150-200 plays in a game and some of us was on the punting and kick off teams as well. I recall the only play I was off the field during a game was receiving the kick off since I punted on 4th down. When people degrade the Clipson era players and teams for their lack of wins, they need to understand the conditions they were made to play under and it's more obvious as to why we endured the lack of success. It was embarrassing for the university.....and us. I had better gear at a ONE red light town in the Florida panhandle that only had 30 players on our team than I had at Troy. At Troy, we dressed in a steel military quansit hut located in what is now the west parking lot behind the baseball stadium with lockers made of chicken wire and one communal shower. Practice gear got washed on Friday whether it needed it or not (peew, the stench of the ammonia smell was almost unbearable by then). There was no weight program or meal program. You ate the same bar b qued liver and mashed potatoes every other student ate. Game day meal? A protein milk shake! Our game pants were white practice pants with a red strip down the leg and we had only ONE pair. The jerseys were made of cloth much like a tee shirt that was torn and sewn over and over. I still have mine to remind me! The red piping faded to orange after one washing. Good stuff!!! I offer this just to let folks know some of my very best friends for life was made with those guys who suffered those inadequacies and stuck it out. I wonder today how many of these players would do the same under the same conditions. We've come a looooooooooong way baby! Go Trojans!
