1) The defense, supposedly our best unit, was not impressive early. On the postgame radio show, CNB said they played "tight". Whatever the reason, they did not play well early on.
2) We have some really talented guys at the skill positions...young, but talented.
3) Jordan Chunn is a beast.
4) Junior Gnonkonde is a bigger beast.
5) Though playing in a mop up situation, our backup QBs looked really good, especially for freshmen.
6) I may be hallucinating on this one, but Brandon Silvers appears to have grown 3 inches and gained 20 pounds since last season. He no longer looks as if he will break in two when hit.
7) We have to eliminate stupid penalties.
Over all, I was pleased. This was a first game against a weaker opponent but we executed on offense and, after a slow start, played well on defense. Now that the dust has settled and Week 1 is in the books, I"ll say we best play well in all phases of the game. This ain't your daddy's Sunbelt and winning it is not going to be easy.

We make these same stupid penalties next week, the Clemson game might be over at the Half. That said, other that that brief period when AP took the lead, I was pleased

That said, other that that brief period when AP took the lead, I was pleased We did indeed commit way too many penalties, but about half of those were just bad calls. And I saw at least 5 holding calls on AP that went uncalled. The crew last might was busch league, or as Domingo Ayala might say, "Semi-pro." On a drive in the second half we had 45 yards of penalties, none of which were the right call. But some of the calls were deserved. #77 getting in the ear of the defensive playing while running 20-30 yards to theendzone is going to draw a flag every time.

As will the shimmy shake performed by #4 after making a stop on the sideline in front of our bench. That, by the way, got him some prolonged face time with Coach Neal Brown and Coach Vic Koenning.

Is there a rule or unofficial understanding not to show replays of these types of things in the stadium? I know there were a few calls my whole section was on their feet protesting, even CNB was giving the officials heck, but there was never any reply to show what happened. The main one I'm thinking of is when it looked like an AP player jumped on one of our guys a couple others jumped in but we were the only ones to get flagged.

Either that, or those guys didn't care because it was a "lowly Sunbelt-FCS matchup" and below them to put in actual effort to call a good game.

It should have been offsetting penalties or against AP. We got hosed on that call.

Like y'all said lack of discipline was disappointing. But see no reason why we can't compete for a Sunbelt title this year.

We won a game we were supposed to win. We looked sloppy for one quarter. I liked the tempo we played at. Very impressed with Sawyer Smith.
My major concern is we got no pressure on the qb first half. I hate to say I had to leave at half time for dinner with our daughter so I don't know if that improved second half. I will say that this staff makes adjustments that work. Optimistic about rest of season. Conference is really tough this year so no game except NMSU will be easy on out. Keep building Trojans and we go bowling

Take a look at second half stats and will tell the story on your question. Game adjustments a huge difference between present and former Trojan coaching execution. Just review LSU disaster @ Baton Rouge and even Bowling Green Loss at Bowling Green. Failure to adjust!! I'm pleased with our backup QB as well!

Very pleased with how we adjust. Also really like the tempo we played at. I was surprised after Smith threw a 50 yd td on his first attempt that he didn't go back in next series. He throws very, very well

Remember, as Neal stated before the game, this was about Troy, not Austin Peay. Very vanilla, while getting a look at a lot of guys.
You go on in with a game plan this week and you execute. You stick with that plan, and if it's close late, then you pull out all the stops and throw everything you have at them.

Shaky early on. Made adjustments and that is awesome. QB play looked great, this could be Silvers year. Chunn, wow what a monster, he reminds me of a faster Earl Campbell. O and D line looked very good. Only questionable spot for me was the DB's, I know we were working a lot of people in and hope they find the right combo. Play calling while not creative was good and tempo was much better. I think this has the opportunity for a good year.

I think the early miscues on defense were explained by Coach Brown when he spoke of "eye discipline", I took to mean "not reading the play" which is a discipline that comes with reps. Adjustments were spot on, although still had some breakdowns, mentally. Things that film study and practice field work should help correct. We tackle better than we have in YEARS (note that this started last year).
