Writer made it sound like Troy never won anything until LB came along. Guess the three teams on the scoreboard are make believe. Can any coach win at Troy other than Blakney?? Neal's first season was better than LB's last so didn't that answer that question?

Neal's first season was better than LB's last so didn't that answer that question? Blak-e-ney, correct spelling of our former Coach! OK, I get it, you feel Blakeney's last 5 years erased all the growth and success the program achieved the prior 50 years. Your opinion and I accept that as your opinion. I noticed, and think more important that our future depends on fan support.... "There appears to be a definite ceiling for fan support at Troy. Even during the height of Blakeney's tenure, and even when teams like Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, and Missouri came to town, Trojan fans haven't managed to sell out Veterans Memorial Stadium." Many posters here blame local (Troy & Pike County) for lack of interest and support. Note, the population of "The Locals" is approx. 23,000. Troy alumni population approximates 100,000. Where is our greatest opportunity for increased fan support?? How do you pull folks in?? I do feel, as an aside, that the present AD and staff are working very hard to find the right formula for building the support base necessary for success of all Troy Athletics in the future. Tough challenge, small mid-major college in a market dominated by BIG, SEC teams, limited budget, weak weekend destination, small student body, poor administrative support in the past etc, etc, etc. Winning helps, but within the limits of the other parameters, it's a steep uphill climb.

So, don't acknowledge any Troy football era but the D2 days, and we would have had sell outs for big home games if South Fla alumni would support... got it! Lol

Writer said quote " can any coach win at Troy other than Blakeney??" My point was. Coaches won at Troy before him and they will win after him. It's called Tradition, earned by players before me, during my time and after my time. Troy football isn't just Blakeney. He was a huge part of it but not the only part. Neal Brown is the current Troy coach and he will get us back to where Troy football should be...winning championships. On your South Florida comment. 1) please look at a map. The function we are doing June 2 is in Tampa, which is a five hour drive from Miami 2) we are trying to get alumni and former players energized about Troy, which I though was a good thing. Thanks go to Steven Stroud on getting this started, seeing a need and acting. It can only help Troy. If we can get even five alumni or former players to donate or drive to a game, IMO it's worth it. Five can turn into 10, 10 into 20

The last 5 years of LB did set us back but NB has us going in the right direction. I can honestly state I had some doubts until I attended the players reunion, got around the coaches and staff and met some of the players. 100% behind Neal and this staff. They are doing things the right way. Grades are up, discipline is back, we are stronger, better coached, better attitudes. It's exciting. fan support is tough. We have to do everything we can. Even what we are trying to do here on June 2 in reaching out to former players and alumni and trying to get them excited about Troy. Logistics of Cent FL is tough, we have a lot of alumni here from the 60's to early 90's. Driving to games is tough 6-9 hour plus drives each way. Maybe we can get some to attend a game or donate. It's worth the effort IMO. Hoping for a success. Go Troy!!

As cornhole mentioned THIS was what shouted at me from the article:
CONS:"There appears to be a definite ceiling for fan support at Troy. Even during the height of Blakeney's tenure, and even when teams like Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, and Missouri came to town, Trojan fans haven't managed to sell out Veterans Memorial Stadium. It's not as quite remote as Moscow or Las Cruces, but given that the nearest "major" metro area with a decently-sized airport is Montgomery--over an hour's drive away--Troy, Alabama is most definitely an outpost."
NOW can we brainstorm HOW to change this? I know IF you private message me the names of individuals (phone numbers, email addresses CAN help) that live in the Metro Birmingham Area I will make PERSONAL contact with them and encourage them to get involved AND at least attend the Trojan Tour Event in Birmingham. Based on what Troystet keeps sharing, IF people will meet and listen to the current staff, they are doing a great job of getting people to buy in to the CURRENT program. As for me and my house, we would just like to have more fans cheering with us, whether it is at VMS or on the road :-)

It's worth the effort IMO. Hoping for a success. Go Troy!! I also get frustrated trying to recruit former students to support their university and participate at athletic events. Even at 74, I wear Troy gear 75% of the time when I'm dressed casual and a Troy cap even more often. I constantly hit on folks I know graduated from Troy to join our alumni association, enjoy returning to Troy for events and I often get "not interested"! Could tell you a really disgusting story concerning our Alumni golf tourney but won't. For whatever the reason, many Troy grads had rather spend their time and money supporting teams they never attended than Troy. I've bought shirts and caps for friends trying to get them turned but very little success. I put a magnetic "T" on one Troy grad friends CADILLAC TRUCK along with the FSU sticker he had already put on it and told him now he supported HIS university. Passed his business the next day......no "T" on his truck. I don't know how we change people like them. They were part of that "get out of the way, I'm going home for my weekend" group that we endured during my years at Troy. I think we still have a bunch there now. We had better basketball attendance in the 60's than they have now but we had a great BB team. Winning will help but our problem is bigger than that. From an athletic pride point of view when compared to the big boys in our area (FSU, UA, AU, UF), our alumni pick them over us. How to change that is going to be difficult!

If people want to support other schools, who they owe nothing to, might I add, that is their choice. Let's stop trying to change old minds, and start to get them right while they are young and impressionable!!

Attendance for football is dismal. Troy may not be the best team in Alabama, but they are good enough to make the games fun to watch. Troy doesn't have a huge stadium, but they do have a nice one and compared to the two SEC schools, tickets are cheap. Students only have 6k or so on campus, so let's not blame them. The alumni is scattered and small in numbers too.
In my humble, but usually accurate opinion, Troy needs to concentrate on the whole gameday experience. Troy can't afford to alienate any group, in fact they need to cater to them. I've heard some say we want the students, but when the students act badly, they don't want to be around them. We want the casual fan, but Lord help him if he shows up wearing anything other than Troy gear. We want families, but they need to tolerate foul language and inconsiderate fans around them. If you read this board, the rules to be a fan include (but are certainly not limited to) 1-- you have to be able to stand every minute of every game. 2-- you tolerate foul language and drunken behavior. 3-- You don't dare wear any fan clothing from another school. 4-- You ridicule donors, especially all 800 in the stadium club for not cheering the way they are supposed to. I could go on.
The gameday experience should be a pleasant, fun, enjoyable time. There will always be the self-centered idiot that wants you to notice him/her but for the vast majority of us, we just want to enjoy a college gameday atmosphere, and watch a good college football game. Troy can certainly provide that with a little imagination, and effort.
I think there are lots of things Troy can do to make the whole experience better. -- The band and cheerleaders could be more involved in pre-game. Some schools break them into small groups, roam around campus, play, dance, socialize and then come together at some point for a grand entry. -- It is a halftime show. Incorporate other things into halftime. Some schools do animations. Have competitions among students for books, gear, gift certificates, or others. -- Incorporate Greek week into gameday. Have spirit competitions. Homecoming is getting better. -- we are Trojans; If we can't have the horse at least fix a golf cart or something up like a chariot. Put some plywood on the sides painted like horses and have it pull a chariot with a Trojan Warrior in the chariot. Have him lead the team out on the field. -- Put a Master of Ceremonies on the field for pregame. Look how other schools use the time after the band quits playing but before the team runs out to rev up the fans. Bring back the East side Troy, West side Trojans, or a similar cheer. Have the Trojan Warrior's chariot racing around the stadium. (Personally I like the Princess on the horse). Maybe we can have both. -- The kids zone is nice but I think we need some more adult activities. Maybe a large tent were visitors can come, get a snack and a beer, watch TV, and tailgate a little.
Lastly put a good team on the field. They don't have to win every game but they should be competitive and play to win every game.
Just a few ideas but there must be 100's of things we could do that just take a little effort and not a lot of money and/or time.
We need to attract the communities of Troy, Montgomery, Dothan, and Phenix City. If we can get those people and the immediate surrounding areas coming to the games and having a good time, I think we'll fill up the stadium.

You aren't going to change the person who wanted to go to Auburn, Bama, FSU etc that had to go to Troy. They didn't want to be there, have no allegiance or loyalty and will never give or attend games. We still need to try but we need to concentrate on my the ones that just lost touch. Even I did when my kids were getting involved in sports. I didn't attend a game from 2001-2007. I have since then every year except last year. I am doing my best to make a game or two this season. Onward and upward, Go Trojans!!!

gotta make sure USC doesn't have that copyrighted How do you copyright a horse and warrior gear? Make a subtle change and you should be good to go. I've pushed this for several years. Time to move away from the sponge man! Surely a country located university has someone who has facilities to care for our stud, heck we had rodeo.
