It was another Troy game at Trojan Arena and another key performance from a senior in a win.
Jeff Mullahey hit a 3-pointer to spark a late 12-0 spurt that helped the Trojans pull away from a pesky Nicholls State Colonels squad and notch a 77-62 victory Tuesday night.
The trey was part of a career-high 19 points for the senior from Pace, Fla., and came a week after fellow senior Hunter Williams tallied a career-best 26 points against LaGrange College.
“It kind of surprised me, too. I got a couple of open 3s from my teammates and hit a bunch of free throws,” Mullahey said of his performance.
None were likely bigger than the three he tallied on his next-to-last shot. After the Trojans lead most of the second half by at least nine points, the Colonels mounted a late charge.
Nicholls State got a couple of baskets in transition from Jamarkus Horace and Shane Rillieux to help whittle a 65-54 Troy lead to 65-60.
After a timeout, the ball found its way into Mullahey’s hands, where he drained a 3-pointer to extend the lead back to eight.
“I think we were running a zone play, and I actually think the play broke down towards the end of the shot clock,” he said. “Fresh (Antoine Myers) drove baseline.
When Fresh drives baseline, I’m always going to the corner. I was open, he kicked it to me, and it went in.”
Tevin Calhoun followed up that three with a couple of layups that effectively put the game out of reach. The Trojans scored 12 straight points to build a 77-60 lead before Nicholls State notched a late basket to round out scoring.
Calhoun said the late timeout helped regroup the Trojans on the floor.
“Teams are gonna make a run, so we have to get our composure and make a run ourselves,” the senior from Linden, N.J. “Make the easy baskets. That’s No. 1.”
“One of the main things we talked about was don’t give up transition baskets,” Trojans head coach Phil Cunningham said. “We don’t want to let a team back in the game with opportunities like that. If they’re gonna get back in the game, let’s make them make some tough 3s.”
The Trojans’ key in building a 40-31 first-half lead was free throw shooting. Troy entered the game hitting 60 percent at the free throw line but hit a whopping 18 of 21 in the game’s first stanza.
Troy gained some first-half separation when Calhoun knocked down a trey and Myers finished off a three-point play to grab the Trojans a 22-14 lead(Full Article).
