dnews.com/breaking_news/no-charges-filed-after-coach-petrino-returns-gear/article_4c7087e4-4c1c-11e5-b541-8f7db4122633.html?mode=jqmAllow me to rant for a moment. I am a sports fan and I particularly like football. As such, I don't spend my time, as some do, complaining about how athletes are given preferential treatment. I think that a lot of times, the basis for these type statements is jealousy. When I read the above linked article however, I found myself thinking about the players involved in this incident. There is no question that these guys were given preferential treatment. The thing about this article that struck me most was this statement; “Under the same circumstances, the university would have taken the same action with any other student(s),” the UI statement said. I don't doubt that statement is true, but few other students would be in the same circumstances. Few other students would have 3 adult staff members (2 position coaches and 1 head coach) run interference for them. Video evidence would suggest these players committed a crime and for the university to handle this "internally" is a diservice to those players, their team mates and the entire student body of the University of Idaho. These players should be held to the same standards as the rest of the population. This is the kind of incident that gives ammunition to those who rant about athletes receiving preferential treatment. The handling of this incident represents a huge failure on the part the university's administration.

I'm sorry, if you don't think athletes get special treatment, you haven't been around enough of them. Now, do they deserve it? Eh, it's whatever. I know that everyone gets special treatment at different points of their life, and high school/college is a big one for most.

Oh, I do think athletes get special treatment and as a rule, I don't get bent about it like a lit of people do. Just like singers and movie stars, they provide our entertainment. My issue with this situation is, at least based on the info provided in the article, that video evidence exists that a crime was committed and the coaching staff, including the head coach, seems to be involved in making it all go away. Little perks, special attention, help with studies not available to other students, no big deal. Committing a crime without facing the justice system, not cool.
