Marianna Bulldogs baseball star Reid Long officially made himself a Troy Trojan on Wednesday afternoon at Marianna High School, signing his letter-of-intent to join the team in the fall of 2014.
A left-handed pitcher, Long led Marianna with an 8-1 record during his junior season and had a 0.95 Earned Run Average to go with 62 strikeouts and just 17 walks in 44 1/3 innings.
Long also was the leading hitter for the Bulldogs last season with a .345 batting average, 29 hits, and 19 RBI, which was tied for the team lead.
He’ll start out as a pitcher with the possibility of getting to hit and play in the outfield as well, but Long said Wednesday that he was just happy to get to reach his lifetime goal of playing college baseball.
“It feels like a dream come true, it really does,” he said. “I thought real hard (about the decision) and felt like Troy was the best fit for me. I think they’ll help me excel at the next level and it’s a real down-to-Earth type of place. And I know (Troy coach and Marianna native Bobby Pierce) will take care of me.”
The Troy program has become a force at the Division-I level in recent years, with Pierce leading the Trojans to 40 or more wins in two of the last three seasons and knocking Alabama out of the NCAA tournament last season in the regionals in Tallahassee.
Long said he was focused on becoming a productive part of the pitching staff when he joins the Trojans as a freshman, but he was also hopeful for an opportunity to contribute as a hitter.
His current coach, Bulldogs head man Carlan Martin, said Wednesday he believes that Long is fully capable of helping Troy in both ways. (Full Article)
