If you are a brand new head basketball coach at a school new to you, it helps to inherit a player like Hunter Williams to help guide your team.
The senior Troy point guard notched a career-high 26 points, helping new Trojans head coach Phil Cunningham get his first official win – a 102-69 victory over Division III LaGrange College Monday.
“ Hunt had 19 at halftime, and Ole Miss (first opponent) did a good job on him. He was 1-for-7 Friday night,” Cunningham said. “We all had a consensus thought that
Hunt would come out guns blazing, and he did, and that’s the way we need him to play.”
The game was never in doubt after Troy finally got on the board at the 17:38 mark. After missing their first few shots, Troy took the lead at 3-2 with a Westley Hinton basket.
From there, it was Williams’ show. In the next five minutes, he poured in 11 points to help the Trojans take a 19-4 lead.
Troy effectively put the game out of reach with an 18-7 spurt between the second and third media timeouts. Williams had six in that stretch, adding another three and a three-point play to help Troy take a 39-15 lead by the 6:34 mark (Full Article).
