As the season opener approaches for the Troy men's basketball, first-year head coach Phil Cunningham will have plenty of experience on the court to lead the team.
The Trojans' roster will feature six seniors and seven overall returning players.
"We're excited about these six seniors. What they've shown us is that they're hungry; they want to win. They're very responsive to everything we've shown them," Cunningham said.
"Senior leadership is an important factor. All of these guys were junior college transfers. Most times for a junior college transfer, his best year will be his senior year. From a basketball standpoint, they've all started playing at the highest level of their careers."
Antoine "Fresh" Myers, Jeff Mullahey, Hunter Williams, Tevin Calhoun, Josh Warren and Wes Hinton will all begin their senior campaign as the team takes on Ole Miss on Friday.
"We've been together for over a year now. All the practices, the games, they all really help bring us together," said Williams.
Williams credits the team's 10-day trip to Spain in early August as the root of the group's close bond.
"That trip was incredible," Williams, who averaged 10.4 points per game last season and is the team's leading returning scorer, said. " We really came together and learned a lot. I think it's really going to pay off during the season."
While learning a new system under a new coach may seem like a challenge for a senior, Cunningham says experience can be a benefit during the process. (Full Article)
