Any thoughts on this hire? Is it all about the recruiting possibilities?

Hey, I'm all in in recruiting Florida but Idaho was horrible defensively. I hope he can coach because we need drastic improvement in our DL.

Ok....A connection with Koenning,,,,I was trying to figure out the formula for hiring an Idaho coach..... He was a graduate assistant under Koenning at Illinois in '10 and '11. Koenning inherited a defense ranked 96th in '09 and turned into the 48th and 15th ranked scoring defenses in '10 and '11. He will know what Koenning expects and that should help improve numbers. BONUS: Dan Disch was a Co-DC (listed first) for Illinois in 2009 when they ranked 96th. The defense improved massively when Koenning took over. Guess who was Co-DC along with Koenning at UNC when the defense was ranked in the 110's? Dan Disch. Yet, he was allowed to stay because he had previously coached with UNC HC Fedora. I've heard several UNC fans (and Koenning) say he had no control, which means Disch was likely calling plays and running things. Whatever happens at Troy, expect UNC to suck on defense again. They fired the wrong guy. Good for Troy. Bam Hardmon (Troy DL coach) was a graduate assistant under both Disch ('08 & '09) and Koenning ('10 & '11) at Illinois and would likely tell you that Koenning was much superior to Dan Disch. Disch had 68th and 96th ranked scoring defenses, VK improved them to 48th and 15th.

UNC hired gene Chizik for DC Thanks. Last I heard Disch was going to stay on staff as DC. That has changed. Good move for UNC, but Fedora's character is questionable and might pull a Tommy Tubberville (Auburn) and put his hands on Chizik's defense.

Any thoughts on this hire? Is it all about the recruiting possibilities? Hopefully we aren't just focusing on recruiting and under estimating on-field coaching.

Honestly I'd figured Sumrall would be the DL coach. Seemed like it would be a smart move.
"Sumrall, who will also serve as a defensive assistant coach, joins the Troy staff after spending the last three seasons as the co-defensive coordinator at Tulane. In addition to ranking among the nation's best in forcing turnovers, Sumrall's 2013 defense finished 22nd nationally in total defense (352.1), 13th in sacks per game (2.92) and 11th in red zone defense (73.5 percent). That season he was named a finalist for FootballScoop Defensive Line Coach of the Year along with coaches from Michigan State, Stanford and Missouri."
I guess that means he will coach linebackers leaving a spot open for a safeties coach. So we have one more defensive hire to make. We need a RBs coach on offense and we should be set with Reagan at QBs, Williams at WR, and Moore at OL.

Shucks fellas, given our track record the last 4 years, I'd gladly take either/or and bet the staff chemistry will all balance out over the next 3/4 years!! GO TROJANS!!!!

We don't need three recievers coaches Has either ever coached running backs? I could only find references to receivers and special teams when I looked. Or does it really not matter since they've had their hands on the offense? Admittedly my knee-jerk reaction to that idea is "I'd rather have kept Beckles."
