In Summary: 50% blame the players (recruiting) for the team's horrible defensive performance in 2014, 25% blame Koenning. The rest blame Fedora's relationship with his Co-DCs, termed a wierd relationship from the start, and Fedora's high tempo offense putting Vic's defense back on the field after a quick 3 and out. The word in that thread is that Koenning was blindsided by the loss of four key players right before the season started as well as 15 scholarships taken away by the NCAA (bowl ban included) back in 2012 right before he arrived. Here's an article on the NCAA sanctions. bleacherreport.com/articles/1101126-north-carolina-football-ncaa-hands-down-bowl-ban-15-scholarship-reduction. Let's keep some perspective here. He was great at Troy and Clemson. Made astronomical improvements at Kansas State and Illinois. He was decent at North Carolina until his last year. Scholarship reductions, injured players, and academically ineligible players likely added to his frustration at UNC as a defensive coordinator. Judging by his track record, and the fact that several of his coaches from his previous stops followed him to UNC, it makes me feel like UNC and Koenning just weren't a good fit. Scoring Defense • Vic Koenning'03 Troy - 42nd '04 Troy - 10th '05 Clemson - 11th '06 Clemson - 16th '07 Clemson - 10th '08 Clemson - 13th '09 Kansas State - 46th (from 110th in '08) '10 Illinios - 48th (from 96th in '09) '11 Illinois - 15th '12 North Carolina - 53rd '13 North Carolina - 43rd '14 North Carolina - 119th

I saw nothing but good things. Just didn't work out. Obviously they liked him, just couldn't bear the bad defense. Can't blame them for that, but I think bad defense runs far deeper than his coaching.

If you're worried about the UNC fan comments about Vic, you should read the UK fan comments about Coach Brown. Let's give the new coaches a chance to prove themselves on the field before we start judging them in Troy. The administration has finally stepped up financially and hopefully we will be back on the upswing.

I'm not concerned. I've wanted VK back for some time. He was one of my top wishes for HC as was NB. The thought of getting them both has me super excited.
The reason I posted the link is because of their support of him. Nothing more.

Many many years ago, he is much more experienced now. Also, I read somewhere NC started 4 walk-ons on defense this season...

He is also not going to be the HC. exactly. I'm super excited about CNB being the HC. I'm confident that the group dynamics of the Football Staff that JH and CNB are hiring/assembling brings individual strengths to the Staff with enough sensitivity, trust and management to mitigate individual weaknesses. This is THE #1 challenge of managing organizational effectiveness and is NOT lost on JH and CNB. I'm impressed and excited at the potential of this staff to date!!!! GO TROJANS!!

Hopefully the new DC will be announced this week whether it is Vic Koenning or not so we can get a leg up on the recruiting trail.

Because it hasn't been announced doesn't mean he isn't working the recruiting trail. No, I get that. I don't have any first hand information any of this. So to me, I have no idea if Vic has even reached an agreement with Troy. The only thing I have to go by is footballscoop.com and a few "insider" fans posting in these threads, which are not always the most reliable source. If an announcement is made, at least we'll know a deal has been struck and our recruits know who our DC is going to be. I haven't head anything from Troy officials other than Neal wanting to make the right decision and not a just a quick decision.

The official announcement was made yesterday about VK departing UNC, so...

Isnt there a saying that each coach might not fit the program? From what I saw his only down years were at UNC. He might have not fit the program.

Assuming Vic K. does become our DC, we will be blessed! He 'loved' his time at Troy and obviously gave us a true sense of what 'The Mighty Trojan Death Machine' was all about. If he and the other defensive coaching staff can get us back to that status, we are all going to enjoy watching some football at Larry Blakeney Field!!!
Go TROY!
