I noticed a lot of folks posting various things about UAB ending its football program. I figured we should have one central locale for it.
Do you think we can pick up a couple of players/assistants? Who do we find as a replacement opponent this late in the game? Do you care?
Let the fun begin...

I'm glad they're dead... One less program to compete with for recruits in the state.
Plus, we never have to go to the Rusty Lady ever again.
+++ I despise UAsB

I would love to see us make the South Alabama game the last game of the year...maybe even agree for it to be the Friday after Thanksgiving to not directly compete with the Iron Bowl. Then replace the standing UAB game with an annual home/home game with Southern Miss.
Both of these schools are natural rivals for us and are located in a recruiting hotbed that we desperately need to dominate.

So Alabama will become our new Jax St if I don't miss my guess!

I would rather South shut down but since that's not gonna happen maybe we can reap some good talent.

Living in Birmingham, I work with several UAB graduates who love their school. While its a rival for us, I do hate this for them, for the players and for a Head Coach who has done a great job this year it appears and a great man from what they say and I hear on the media outlets here. Scares me for college football in general and those that might follow suit due to losing money. There are several players (running backs 6 and 7) would love to see us pick up and that ran all over us in August. Probably some OL players too.

You know what ticks me off? The article on Al.com that talks only of the benefits to South Alabama football if the UAB football program shuts down. It's as if Troy doesn't exist or doesn't play in the FBS.

What a crappy way for this to be handled. This will have a trickle-down effect on their Conference affiliation and all other athletics programs. Sucks for all them.
Now, it does seem an excellently timed opportunity to help fill some roster and staff slots.

I noticed we used to have a direct link on their sports page but that has gone away and we are simply listed with the other FCS programs on their site. At one time we were listed with Al, Auburn, UAB and South Al. I hope we find away to benefit from the loss of UAB. It would be nice to see southern miss on the schedule. What prevents us from having Jax State or Alabama state on our schedules....seems like they both would probably fill our stadium considering the attendance at both schools home games.

I was under the impression that once the hammer came down, they'd have two years to finish out their scheduling contracts and then no more UAB Football. I figured their contractual obligations would stop UAB from dropping football cold turkey. No?

Hartwell expressed no desire to play Jax St. Because of their recent success. I have no problem Whupping Jax St again. ASU or FAMU woukd be a certain win, had we played Jax St. This year..who knows.

Would the players be more likely to go to USA than TROY. They may be unless we get some of the coaching staff.

Here is how it effects us, We go get Cornelius Williams (WR coach), Duwan Walker (DC) & Chuck Dunn (LB coach) and bring them home along with any players and recruits that they think we need!

Two years till no more football raises a lot of questions- what players will stay? How does one replace players who graduate? Are coaches free to leave if program is going away? How do you motivate players? Seems the smart thing to do is for Conference teams to have an open date or find a last minute replacement.

If they have to field a team 2 more years Bolt will be looking for a job so maybe clark could get him as a DC.....

If UAB football gets cut cold turkey we will need a team to replace them on the schedule. Looking for a cupcake as we have a monstrous OOC schedule next season.

Another thought would be to move it to this Saturday. The SBC doesn't have a Championship Game & there is a limited supply of available games to watch/attend for fans. Could be a really good niche to fall in. Plus, lets assume Troy & S. Alabama continue to build successful programs...that game could become a deciding factor in the SBC Championship many years making it relevant to the entire conference.

It would be cool if Troy could pick up some of the UAB assistants. Chuck Dunn would be a good one to get.
