Probably our top candidates. Brown would be a solid hire while Wilson would probably rebuild the program entirely. Wilson [who is very interested in the job btw according to La. papers] seems to be highly organized and a great recruiter. I think both Brown and Wilson would be totally different types of HCs at Troy.
Brown is talented and already quite experienced. He could even bring Schlarman and Scott. I think he would come in, change some things, add some recruits, bring some coaches and leave Troy after a few years (Troy would improve, outscore its opponents and sneak into a few bowl games, defense would still be soft though). However, we would be in a similar situation in a few years from now.
Wilson would probably change a lot more and lay the foundation for a new Troy program. He seems to be interested in creating networks, building programs, etc. Recruiting would dramatically improve (OFF and DEF), probably new pipelines in LA and MS, JUCOs and HS. Brown is probably more into x's and o's, etc He is a proven SEC coordinator, more mature than a few years ago. The Brown/Schlarman/Scott combo would add some real quality to the coaching staff. Not sure about Wilson, he seems to be a solid coach but does he insist on calling plays? Neal Brown could be HC and OC, calling plays, or at least he would be more than qualified to intervene in certain situations(!).
I think smaller schools need head coaches who are more involved in play calling or at least head coaches who really understand what's going on. BCS schools can afford smart/experienced coordinators, they really can afford the CEO HC type.
CEO vs actively involved coordinator-head coach:
> If Wilson brings in a talented OC, he would be my top choice, otherwise I would go with Neal Brown.

I know it was some time ago so I've forgotten the whole story, but Wilson as a HS head coach put more players in the espn 300 over his few years than any other coach in that timespan. I'm not a fan of HS coaches taking the job, but I do believe it speaks for his character. A lot of guys have talent sitting there unused, so it takes a good coach to make them realize what's at stake and break into their untapped potential. Really think given 2 seasons he could have us at the top. I'm not going to be upset if the first year the man isn't 12-0 and has the best recruiting class in the nation like it seems some people want. It takes time to be great, but I think he can take the program to new heights.

I was just about to post a thread like this!
I honestly don't know... After really looking deep into both guys it's a hard pick... I'm putting my faith in Troy to do the right thing...
Word is Frank Wilson has turned down HC jobs at La Tech and USM previously... And also turned down a OC position under freeze at ole miss... If so... Why Troy?

Also Wilson was National recruiter of the year in 2011 and 2014....

If brown comes, please explain why Schlarman would come to Troy to be a coordinator? He has it made at his alma mater, all of their family is there. He is making bank and has been co-coordinator already. Major step down in my opinion.

John Schlarman, OL coach at Kentucky, $233,000 (incl. bonus) He could be OC at Troy and we would have to pay a bit more than Kenny Edenfield, $156,000 (incl. bonus).

Plus, it moot point, Neal Brown NOT coming back.

It seems like you hear a rumor and then make up the rest. Am I wrong? What do I know? I'm just a shoe shiner on a message board. I see you take blurbs from different sites and try and twist them into some kind of breaking news. You are blowing up the boards from your candidate pool.

I just wonder, as it relates to him, if we have more money for coaches salaries now why not earlier to help LB gets better assistants. Inquiring minds want to understand!:-)

Little Jimmy Hartwell on the verge of missing a huge opportunity. Bright shiny objects are too distracting for LJH and Dear Leader.
