Sun Belt Conference commissioner Karl Benson said the month of November should be a good one for the league. There are several important games scheduled as the regular season comes to a close. That list includes Saturday's South Alabama at Louisiana-Lafayette game. The Jaguars were picked to finish third in the preseason coaches' poll, while the Ragin' Cajuns were the unanimous pick to win the league crown once again. Heading into the game, Lafayette is No. 2 in the standings at 3-0 - the Ragin' Cajuns are 4-3 overall - behind newcomer Georgia Southern at 5-0. The Eagles are 6-2 overall. As a team in the final year of a two-year transition from Football Championship Subdivision to Football Bowl Subdivision membership, Georgia Southern is not eligible for a bowl invitation this season (unless not all bowl slots are filled) but the Eagles can win the Sun Belt championship. South Alabama, picked to finish third in the preseason coaches' poll, is currently third at 4-1. The Jags are 5-2 overall and on a four-game win streak. Kickoff for Saturday's game is 4 p.m. CDT. The game can be viewed on ESPN3. "Georgia Southern obviously, isn't necessarily a surprise, but a very pleasant surprise,'' Benson said. "I think we were expecting that they would be pretty good right off the bat and they have shown that. I think we've seen South Alabama kind of continue what they had going last year and they are in position to get bowl eligible and compete for a Sun Belt championship, and that's still in play.... PRAISE FOR BLAKENEY: Asked to comment on the recent announcement by Troy head coach Larry Blakeney that he would resign as the Trojans' head coach at the completion of this season, Benson had plenty to say. "He's a legend,'' said Benson... Full Article: www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2014/10/sun_belt_conference_commission_2.html

I just don't get it. I've only been a fan for 15 years and have been happy with the wins, but I just don't see how it is anywhere near legendary. I know it is an extremely easy time to be negative but I have always thought that CLB was a good coach but not great or legendary. I mean, I hate to discount what he has done, but I think staying around too long has worn out his status.

LB was a good coach but not a legend. He had success at the 1-AA level but we never won a Nat. championship despite being ranked #1 several years. We laid a egg in the first or second round several times. We had a couple of losing records also in 1-AA. We had losing records are first few years in d1 and it took Franklin to get us success. The last 4 years have been a disaster. Larry took us from D2 to D1 and had some success but he is not a legend.

Entitled to your opinion. Appreciate everything he did but i don't consider him a legend. Last 4 years really tarnish him also.

Agree Hemi......just wish he would have taken an exit a few years ago. His status has taken a hit and it's a shame to go out on such a pathetic last few years. I have been a TROY fan since the early 80's and know where we were and where Larry took us and the potential we have moving forward and for this I am grateful.

Coach Blakney took Troy football from one step above 6A high school to big time college football. He and his teams served notice on the Sun Belt immediately by winning 5 conference titles right out of the gate. He brought Troy it's first wins (that's plural) over power conference opponents (again plural). He is the third winningest college coach in the history of the state. He has 58 more headcoaching wins than all other Sun Belt Coaches combined. He most certainly IS a LEGEND!!! Anyone who cannot see that is a nincompoop!

Whoa there now ... have to differ with you on this one! I played on very successful 4A (top division) HS team ... then was also on the 84-87 TSU teams! Those teams were not "one step above" a HS team! I will assume you weren't a player?? There were several players off those teams that went on to NFL, USFL, and CFL. Some Great Players!! (I was not that good ... but we had great players!!) I weekly played against future NFL guys. It was not "one step above HS"!! I in no way want to disrespect LB ... he has been a very good/successful coach for Troy. Very much appreciate all he's done ... and with class!! The plan to move up had been there for years before LB got here. (I know they mentioned it on my recruiting trip in 84). We reached the pinnacle of DII. (limited scholarships, limited resources, etc.) I'm glad we moved up ... I'm glad LB was able to take advantage of us moving up (increased scholarships/resources, etc) and continue our success. He did what great HCs do .. hired great staffs and recruited well and then coached them up! Again, with a lot of class!! But, I feel certain, that if after 84, we'd started the move up ... Coach Gailey and/or Coach Rhoades would have enjoyed similar success. So, in your desire to pay LB proper and deserved respect ... take care that you don't disrespect others who helped lay the foundation that LB has built upon!

I was attempting to illustrate the significance of going from the lowest divisions of scholarship college football to the highest in a very short span with immediate success upon arrival. I used the analogy, poorly chosen as it may have been, to show how far we came with Coach Blakeney in a very short time. I have great respect for Coach Gailey, Coach Rhodes, and the Trojans who played on the 84 and 87 teams. I apologize for offending any of them, that was not my intent.

Good deal ... no problem! I know we're all here because we love Troy! Having the opportunity to play at Troy ... for the coaches we had and with the guys I played with ... Changed my life!! Winning, of course, has a lot to do with it. I really hate the Blakeney era has ended this way ... he deserved much better. Still, what he's contributed to Troy will stand for ever. I didn't play for him, and have only been around him a few times. But, you can surely tell he's a good and classy man!! Actually met him when he was recruiting my HS for Auburn. I was a mediocre player ... but played with some 5 stars! (I guess they had those ratings then Some of the recruiters would come in and ignore everyone else. But I remember Coach Blakeney talking to me, asking me how I was doing, and even commenting on what kind of season I was having! For a mediocre/undersized player ... who dreamed of playing college ball ... that was huge! He encouraged me ... and called me by name each week! Now, I know that's just good recruiting (win the friends and family of the recruit) ... but I could also tell he wasn't faking it. So, he's a special man. I believe Troy has been blessed with some special/exceptional coaches through the years!! (HCs and assistants). I hope we can start another "era" ... marked by class and success!!
