"I kind of like somebody who hasn't always had all the resources," Hartwell said.
I think this is the key to Troy's next head coach. Although I don't think a Troy man is necessary, it would be nice to reach out to someone like Turk or Campbell and give them a chance at this level. Both have done well with limited resources.

"I kind of like somebody who hasn't always had all the resources," Hartwell said. This sounds like the lowering of expectations so we are not disappointed when they hire someone that is not a big name.

I have no problem doing what ULL and Georgia Southern did, hire a proven winner from DII and FCS. Better off with that than some coordinator that has never been a HC

Hartwell said two things I have been saying, "think outside the box" and if a guy is only here 3 years or so and gets a bigger gig, that is a good thing, it means we are winning. Just like I hope Cunnigham is gone in a year or two, I like him a lot, but if a bigger program sees him, it means he has taken us to another level.

What's the definition of low expectations? Troy can't afford to pay a "big" name coach. If we hire a coach who recruits well and wins, what difference does it make? Arkansas State has done well over all with their hires.

@drewchamplin: Hartwell - "Not going to narrow the field by saying you have to have been a HC or a coordinator" on Troy job The PR game of lowering expectations has begun...... It is a classic tactic. Lower the expectations to the point that when the choice is announced, most we say "well, that is not too bad, we can live with that"

Lower the expectations to the point that when the choice is announced, most we say "well, that is not too bad, we can live with that" BINGO!!! It is no reflection on the person they hire, it's a way of lowering expectations to a level that almost anyone that is decent can be sold as a solid hire.

The person we hire will announce to the world the intentions of our administration of what they want Troy Football to be. What about hiring someone who HAS had some of the bells and whistles and will help us get those. To me this is the make it or break it decision for John Hartwell.

At the end of the day, it's blessed or cursed by JHJr, Our Dear Leader. From the sounds of it, they're going for a more with less kind of guy. It did sound like they will start building in 2015, even though the donations have been pedestrian at best. We'll see it the admin is going to put up or let the program continue to flounder...

Well, a few things are certainties and one is we (here on this board) AINT gonna hire this coach. JH and the powers that be will and for my two cents worth I don't give a tinkers darn where he comes from AS LONG AS HE IS THE RIGHT PERSON FOR TROY. I, personally, trust JH until he gives me reason not to and so far he seems to be doing just fine until something proves he's not. JMHO!

Axe how this strategy worked for Old South Mississississippippi. Come on, Ho surprise you fall for the ol' slick-talking, visor-wearing trick. Fedora left that program in shambles and he not care one bit NOT ONE BIT. Now Ho no fool, but if we hire someone like Turk, Campbell, Tommie Robertson, maybe we get lucky and they stay.

Having Coach Blakeney wander around the field house is a bad idea in my opinion. The next coach needs to have 100% ownership of the team. Bobby Bowden did a good thing by distancing himself from the program for a year after he was done. Nothing against Coach Blakeney and I am thankful for all he has done.

I would think Coach Blakeney has enough class to understand his role and his place. If he can now have time to raised donations and maybe attract a great player or two to Troy then let him "wander"!

Agreed. My guess is that he won't be spending a lot of time in the field house anyway.

I like the fact that Larry wants to be involved in fundraising etc. He will be a huge asset to have doing the backslapping, chicken dinner quarterback club things that so many people hate to do.

Spitballing here (as far as you know) but I'll predict that wondering about what he's doing and it possibly getting under the skin of the new guy will not be a problem beyond 12/31/15.
