After all the recruiting where you look for talent, and the practices where you learn the skills, teams come to the locker room to get ready and they come back after the game to celebrate. A lot of introspection goes on there as well as a lot of teamwork building. I've heard a lot on this board about facilities, discipline, character, talent, recruiting, coaches, etc, etc.
How do we recruit? Do we beat the bushes to find good athletes with high moral values, good character traits, positive attitudes, and a winning desire? OR Do we look at the CDs someone sends in or go to Scout.com and just look for the skill sets we need at the time. The former gets a kid that wants to be a player on a good team, the latter often gets a kid more interested in being a prima donna and how he's treated as an individual.
Discipline: The first thing that has to be gained is discipline. Work hard, study hard, sacrifice, inspire, lead, follow; recognize whatever is needed and take appropriate action. Long hair, saggy pants, ear buds, sloppy attire, hats on sideways, doesn't make anyone a bad person but when those things become the focus of your non-conformity, then you not doing what is best for the team and they shouldn't be overlooked. Your conduct off the field is just important (or more so) than what you do on the field. The vast majority will not play above this level. figure out what is best for the team and then do it. On game days get ready. The first time the fans see you is on the Trojan walk. Come out as a team, wear what the team wears, act mature, engage the fans. If you need to show everyone how sloppy and sullen you can look and be then go back home because you're not a team player. You only get one chance to make a first impression make it a good one. Talent without discipline is no good. Good discipline with less talent will win in the long run. YES coaches need to constantly check. A kid with a lot of talent and a bad attitude is a cancer that will ruin a team if not removed. He is challenging you and your leadership as a coach. Don't excuse bad behavior because of talent.
Facilities: I like nice facilities. I like the stadium, the score board, the ribbon board, a chair back seat, etc. If I were a player, I'd like a nice locker room, training facilities, and weight room. But those things don't determine how you play. They're not as important as some think they are. They won't cure attitude problems, character flaws, lack of discipline, or no team building. They're just the places we use to help get the job done. they just need to be upgraded according to the norms and available cash. Some of my most cherished moments occurred at or within places that I didn't want to be there. The rewards of camaraderie, companionship and teamwork far exceeded conditions. I seriously doubt that I'll ever watch a game live in Green Bay Wisconsin. I can't imagine playing there is sub-zero temperatures. It would certainly be nicer if it were under a dome. But Green Bay isn't a bad team regardless of the facility they play in and the fans seem to love it too. You'll remember how good the people and the team were and laugh about how bad the conditions were. The football fields looks almost identical at every place and that's where the game takes place.
The Locker room is more that just a place to change your clothes. It's the place where you transform from student to athlete; from individual to team: from practice to player. They have an attitude and character of their own. It is a place that should be supportive and enabling for everything you need to win games. It's where you change from preparing for the game to getting into the game. If there's accusations, fights, disrespect, individuality or any other distractors they need to be eliminated. After the game the procedure is reversed as you transform back to student. If it was a good game then relish it for as long as you can. If it wasn't a good game then put it behind you as quickly as you can. Either way you have a new challenge next week. It's the team's locker room you just have a locker. A good attitude and a strong desire can overcome a lot of obstacles. A poor attitude and little desire can create a lot of obstacles. This team needs to figure out which ones they want to have.

Excellent points. To answer the recruiting question? We don't beat the bushes. We rely on our camp and juco's. Results show the last 3 years and the 0-3 start this year.

I got HS coaches I know trying to tell Troy about players, send them film...they get the same answer, we need to see him at camp to evaluate him. Last time I checked you play in pads and helmet against a opponent, not run drills in shorts. i have teammates in Georgia and Tampa area. They are banging their heads against the wall trying to get Troy to look at guys. They never see a coach and these players are going to Georgia Southern, Midfle Tennessee, the MAC and elsewhere. They are absolutely dumbfounded and disgusted.

They have all emailed and sent stuff to Beckles....the silence is deafening. Their biggest gripe is they never, ever see anyone from Troy, yet they see Georgia Southern, USA, Marshall, Akron, UAB, MTSU, WKU and others I think I'll have a beer.

I will personally put them in the hands of coach Beckles. I think I'll have a beer.

That statement just summed it all up. A fan has to get a coach to answer and acknowledge coaches who have tried to contact him....wow.

Hemi, I'm not giving you their names. They have pretty much give up on it. It's not my place to go give their names out. They did their part, they have a bad taste in their mouth with Troy right now. Whether you think I'm telling the truth is up to you. I can just tell you I sent info myself and got no response also. I'm not going to beg anybody. I'm frustrated with this and several things right now. It's their job as a coach to get players looked at. When they get no response or never see a coach, they move on to the coaches who are doing their part and the ones they see and hear from.
But next time I see them, I will ask permission to give you their names.

I've sent names and contacts. I have never received any response from anyone in the football department. One kid is a great receiver for Arky state and another is at GA state. I wasn't even given a thank you for contacting anyone. When I asked Coach Blakeney about it he said it was best if I sent a CD to him. Seems to me I did my part. I'm not sure how much more I should or can do since I'm a donor. One coach from a small 3A school contacted Troy and no one contacted him back. He told me he was fed up with Troy so he contacted GA State.

None of the requests were ever responded to except one, and that response was a standard acknowledgment of the request.

Well that's 3 out of 3 personal testimonies that spell a sad commentary for maintaining a winning program.

It's odd because I just saw where a coach responded to a message the same day about a recruit.
I'm not a Troy fan because of wins and losses.
