We should bring in ringers for key games. Seeing as there are no rules anymore. Let’s hire Brandon Silvers for the Iowa game and maybe some NFL players with legal troubles for when we play south. I’ll be honest and say I haven’t renewed my tickets yet. I’m upset with the game, not Troy.

I find these Transfer statements by the exiting player to be mostly bullcrap. $$ talk, players walk. Why can't he just say "TU offered me more/less, I'm outta here."
It will be interesting to see where he lands.

I can be doing SO MUCH with my time, energy, and resources on Saturday afternoons in the fall. Maybe I'll spend what I did last year on scuba diving this fall instead.

I will be there in the fall, every Saturday. It's more than just football or entertainment for me. Tailgate time with lifelong friends is not easily replaced. That said, in the "old days", which was not too long ago, you used your strength as a recruiter, your programs accolades, and your coaches reputation to sign the guys you want and build a great program. Now the competition for recruits has moved from the staff office to the banks. Troy's 8 SBC titles since 2006 don't mean as much when Texas State can sign big time talent just by opening their wallet. I always looked forward to recruiting season, and then the fall to see what we could do. Recent developments have me thinking about football less and less during the down months. Other things on my mind.

This past "Bowl" season crystalized and brought all the negative factors into focus, players opting out of games, Coaching staffs shredded by "selling out" early, Conference changes, Portal, NIL and you name what? $$$ and the potential of more $$ drives all the change. NCAA seems impotent to do anything right. Agree with all the above, just makes the game less interesting for this fan.

That's as much a given saying Clemson fumbled or that the UAB receiver was down at the one.

Other things on my mind. It's easier for me. Probably because my whole life hasn't really existed around sports/football the way most guys are; particularly those from the south. So my lifelong friends and I bonded over other interests unrelated to the sport and we're not locked into it thankfully. But the other angle for me is, you can't follow a player's career and development on your team anymore. They're here for a season and gone and you can't "bond" with the roster...so you're less and less emotionally invested. At least that's how it is for me.

Absolutely the truth. And maybe to a greater extent "Bonding" with Coaches and Staffs who are here short term.
Bummed.

Seeing mutual thoughts throughout this thread, TOTALLY understand and agree! Usually by this time of year I have a) purchased our season tickets, b) have Spring Practice on my schedule with at least one trip planned to watch them in Troy, c) planned travel & accommodations for at least three away games ... not the current status this year

I think college has lost their compass. I think it started when Freshmen became eligible. I don't think NIL is a bad thing. Certainly if I use someone's NIL they deserve compensation. Anyone over the age of 18 should be able to negotiate contracts that pay the athlete for a service whatever they decide is just.
However, it has quickly evolved into pay for play and the richer schools can buy better talent than the less rich.
It used to be that the good coaches that stayed around built teams around their culture and expertise. They recruited players that fit their mold and coached them to develop the skills and attitudes necessary to be good people as well as good players. This took a few years and it required dedication by both the coaches and the student-athletes.
Good Athlete Directors built programs. They hired the coaches, build the facilities, romanced the alumni, gathered a fan base, and excited students. They maintained what they had and built better when they could. Athletics was the front porch of the institution.
I'm afraid we've lost a lot of that.

I will but now or soon I am cheering for a jersey only and a variety will fill it unless there is a grip Put on the game. I have witnessed a demise of a great sport over the last three years. Can it be resurrected? I will buy and I will donate but just plain slower this year due to the 203 reasons already stated.

By the way I am watching Oakland and NCSt in the tourney right now and David is playing with a Goliath of sorts. Basketball can still give this but in football now more then ever even a pseudo Goliath like NCSt no G5 will ever develop under current standings

I have always been invested with coaches and players, but not over being invested in my TEAM. Coaches and players have always come and gone (it’s just a lot quicker these days). Troy is still here. I’m still here. And on football Saturdays in Troy I’ll be where I always am. With family and friends tailgating and getting ready to cheer on the Trojans. We’ll plan road trips and watch parties, buy new gear, I’ll even buy the Gerad Parker button and Lord willing, when he wins a certain number of games and moves on I’ll retire his button to my former head coach collection. I don’t like all these changes either but at the end of the day, I’m a Trojan.

But many Trojan supporters/fans are NOT Troy Grads and follow the program for reasons other than heartfelt investment. At the end of the day, these folks are Sports Fans first and follow college athletics both here and elsewhere. To watch a player or staffer grow, progress and be a part of that success through purchasing season tickets, traveling to away games and supporting Trojan Warrior efforts goes far beyond any school loyalty. That part of the game has been taken away. ATC*

Cornhole poured himself into coaching staffs and the school and teams. It is not hard to see the sentiment of his post with a longing for what was college athletics even on the Troy level. Just listen again to Saban talk about his wife. We older guys have just a hard time swallowing what is the reality of today. I expect that he and I and many others will still be there cheering it just plain sucks. I quit teaching after 35 years med students because THEY had changed so much. I personally will hold on to the football because it was my true respite. Still love a game that paid for my undergrad and have enjoyed watching for probably 55 years but it’s a business hard and fast. See you this spring or in the fall but yes as said so much better than I could, it is just a sad time for college athletics and “It’s” fans.
