More to it than just coaching db's. Does he have the organizational skills, the attention to detail, the ability to build a staff? The HC at JMU is a proven winner and know how to both rebuild and maintain a program and is making $425K. Bring him to Troy and double his salary and we know exactly what we are getting. He has rebuilt programs and kept JMU at the top (something (The HC we don’t speak of) has proven to not be able to do). You don't have to pay $1,000,000 to get a coach that wins necessarily. There are hungry, proven coaches that would love to have the facilities and tradition we have here. Wasn't your boy Campbell also a proven winner? We saw how that turned out. Just because you are a great HC at JMU doesn't mean it will work here. Steve is a good coach. Don't hire close friends for your staff because you can't fire them when it doesn't work. And just because you coach DB's in the NFL doesn't mean you have the skills for a HC. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't. The JMU coach has won at D2, and two FCS programs and won big. It is all a crap shoot, but it worked big for GATA when they hired Fritz from Sam Houston. If we get it wrong again we turn into Miami and FSU who both can't recover from the wrong choices. I have no problem with a assistant coach but I hope we realize the intangibles that NB brought and look for that again. Imagine what this program would look like right now if we hired CL after LB???

Let's say that we wake up and actually want to be a premier G5, what are the thoughts about Luke Fickell at Cincinatti? Let'$ say we drop delusion$ and get reali$tic. Hire the best that we can afford??

Was being sarcastic because his style would be disastrously bad for the FBS (or not idk). What are your thoughts on John Grass, he has beaten a fre FBS teams and JSU is competitive. Ignore the rivalry and look at his resume, it is not that bad Grass was gotten a lot of pub, his name is out there in the coaching circles.... He will get a bigger gig, my money is just not at Troy. Have some insights into that program… not sure it’s the culture that any of us want. Not saying we need a choir boy, but we do need a solid culture. He’s also benefited greatly from kids dropping down and not having to sit. He won’t have that luxury at TROY. Not against FCS. Not a fan of THAT hire.

Hawkins will take the discount route, for sure. John Hartwell must've been the only AD with balls to tell Hawkins to ante up more money for coaches. In the meantime last 10 years we have 3 winning seasons. Like I told people in the know when Larry was retiring, either put up the money or move back to FCS. CNB was hired. Time again to belly up with the money and at least try and get Ansley. I'll even bet even money that Vic will. Ansley has been a DC at Tennessee so he has experience and he loves coaching. As it was mentioned on another post, if he can coach prima-donnas in the NFL, 18-22 year old young men should not present any major dilemmas. While I think that I probably knew that 3/10 winning season thing in the back of my mind, daaaaaaang it hurt to bring it to the front of my mind. Thanks for the post - and unfortunately, the reminder.

I would like to see Troy get a fresh start. I'm beginning to get tired of hiring coaches with Troy ties. Shane Meade and Scott Cross being hired for baseball and basketball was refreshing.
There are some young head coaches out there that have proven they can be successful at the G5 level, but for whatever reason it isn't panning out at their P5 jobs.
Here are some head coaches that have a somewhat high likelihood of being fired this season:
Scott Frost, Nebraska Jeff Brohm, Purdue Mike Norvell, Florida State Manny Diaz, Miami
Would you take any of them? From this list it would be Scott Frost Brohm would be interesting.

Don't know much about the other two but I'd take Frost or Norvell in a second. I'll say it again, Nebraska has problems a coach can't fix, Florida State, too.

I would take Brohm, Frost, or Norvell.
Any of those three, if they are available, would he a slam dunk hire IMO.
If Neal Brown were to somehow get let go from WVU, that'd obviously be everyone's choice I'd imagine... I don't see him getting let go from WVU though.
