Game discussion: At this point with very little to read as far as data. I think we are better than last year. Not sure what that will get me at Sisters for lunch but it is better than my usual over the last two years of ….. we kind of suck at times. Its’s called hope!!!!! Buzz - overall, the team executed. Pros - QB1 made good decisions generally (one bad one going in on a drive, but generally good). QB1 showed some mobility. Off/Def/ST showed up and executed against this team. In the very recent past, we’ve let teams like this stay in the game - tonight it was never in doubt. RBs after a while got in a rhythm. Receivers made catches - some really nice catches while being defended. Defense - created turnovers!!! They also tackled well. And they played assignments well. QB2 led a 10+ min scoring drive at the end of the game. Very low penalties. That’s actually a +++, because our opponent was cheap-shotting left & right and almost every play the entire night. Cons - normal first game mistakes. Missed PAT. QB bad decision I mentioned earlier - was in the grasp & tried to throw it away… didn’t throw it far enough or well enough to clear the defense. Gave up a couple of explosive plays on defense. Questions - besides the most obvious - talent of opponent being any kind of measuring stick…. The big one for me was rushing. At the half, we had well under 100… for 3.2 per carry. That gave me concern. I don’t know what the gameplan was, so the high passing yardage vs rushing didn’t bother me, but the per
carry did. Again, it corrected itself later in the game, but not sure that we can wait til second half for other opponents. BOLD TYPE. That 3.2 at half caught me eye as well. Our OLine is big and stout. But i question the mobility?

Obviously this was a game against a lesser opponent. That being said however, we played and won the game like you are supposed to given such a game. We won by 4 touchdowns... wait, we won by way more than that. Next week against Liberty will be a tougher match up and a better measure of how good we are. I'm looking forward to it.

I refer you to the Campbell game. Beat them soundly and won only four more after that.

Our OLine is big and stout. But i question the mobility? I’m not saying he’s Caleb Barker when Caleb was healthy. He’s also not Levi. He’s somewhere in between. He’s more of an “extender” than an explosive runner. But even that extension ability is good. Just one old dude’s perception. Lots of football (and I hope better football against better opponents) to be played.

Overall solid performance, next week will be the test! Agree re: overall numbers. We had half fields and less several times due to 3 picks. I was saying 3.2 yards per rush against a 1-AA team was worrisome. We ended with 4.2, which is enough to keep the the chains moving. Now, I will say Southern’s team was a big, physical looking team (at least eyeballs - didn’t read depth chart). Sometimes you can see size differences - especially against 1-AA/FCS teams, but not last night. But with our experience up front, I expected more per carry output earlier. I’m sure they are working on assignments today and tomorrow. Go TROJANS!!!

I agree with peewee26 Powell is a play extender indeed He had complete command of the offense and he seems to have good repor with the receivers Hope he can play a bigger role with RPO inside the 20 meaning pulls it and run it between the tackles
Next week will be a great test.
Would like to see our special teams be a real difference next week
D is ready
Physically - we look the part - we look in shape and we were physical
Go Troy and Cry Havoc!

Also - so glad Southern brought their band If you were able see them march in down George Wallace - it was awesome and they marched out of the stadium and down George Wallace.
They added to the atmosphere and enjoyed the halftime show by both bands

I think some of the low rushing #s (and overall offense #s) were caused by the short field position that our defense provided us with on the interceptions. Overall solid performance, next week will be the test! The short fields had an impact on rushing average as did a couple of scrambles that resulted in really short gains. When the dust settled, Kimani and BJ both had rushed for 5.4 yds/carry. That's not at all shabby. One other observation: I get we were playing an FCS school and with a few exceptions, they didn't put pressure on Powell all night - they had 0 sacks. Powell dropped some dimes last night. On one of the early TD's he threw a back shoulder fade to the front corner of the South end zone. He also moved up in the pocket well and made good throws to his secondary receivers. It's early, Southern was certainly not the best completion we will see, but I liked what I saw. I couldn't have made those throws against the air that was previously mentioned.

Hadn’t considered the scramble aspect. And I didn’t have the stats on the RBs. Will say the longer runs were in second half… that first long one in the second half took us from 60 something (62 I think at the half) total to just under 100 (98 - if I remember) total. And agree about the no sacks, low pressure, and nice throws. I was glad to see both. Our guys made some nice catches, too.

I was encouraged by most of what I saw in the game. Iâll keep cheering for wins. Even if that means (The HC we don’t speak of) gets a chance to return next year.
âWeâll always cheer for victory!â Has to be the song we sing! The echo of our heartbeat as Trojans!
Cry HAVOC!!!
