Scott Cross just got two more transfers.
First one is 6'9"/240 forward Rifen Miguel, who is coming in via Ohio University. He'll have two years to play. He played in 12 games for Ohio this past season.
He was the #53-ranked JUCO recruit in the nation last year when he signed with Ohio.
He originally held offers from Ohio, WKU, UMass, Missouri State, Radford, Milwaukee, James Madison, Chattanooga, ULM, Jax State, Southern Illinois, Towson, Illinois-Chicago, and Grambling State.
--------------------------
The second guy is Cody Deen, a 5'10" point guard transferring in from Panola College (JUCO). Deen had one of the best 3-point shooting percentages (42%) in all of JUCO this past season.
When he was a senior in high school in 2020, he was named Louisiana's Player of the Year by the Shreveport Times. His HS head coach thinks the only reason he's not had any P5 offers is because he's 5'10".
He had offers from UTA, Texas State, Bradley, Nicholls State, and Longwood.

Sounds like Cross has found some good replacements for losing Woods, Burnett, Pantophlet, and Mendes. Only Kam Woods saw a decent amount of playing time, but he became a bench player toward the end of the year.
I'm glad Cross has brought in two guys with D1 playing experience, and another who has been lighting up the JUCO world with his shooting ability. That will add competition to the lineup and help everyone get better.
I'm guessing Cross will be looking to sign one more player. Curious if it will be a HS player or another transfer.

He's also won an SBC title, went to the NCAA Tourney, and made it to the NIT quarterfinals. (The HC we don’t speak of) (The HC we don’t speak of) has beaten..........

Going to take a great coach to get some guys who left other schools for various reasons to come together. He is a proven winner for sure and Lord knows we need to start winning because football, basketball and baseball is getting depressing

Cody Deen was already at a JUCO and ready to transfer. He finished high school with a 4.3 GPA and seems to be a high character kid.
Efe Odigie left UTEP because his coach got fired, and he already had to sit out last season because of an injury after being a freshman phenom.
Rifen Miguel left Ohio because he simply wasn't getting enough playing time.
TK Smith left Kent State because he wasn't getting enough playing time.

My question is, can Cross get all of these transfers to gel before the season starts? I know he had a lot of spots to fill, but it's hard to build a team with transfers and JUCOs. Ask Larry Blakeney, or Maestri for that matter.
I was going to wait until we were closer to the basketball season to say this, but all I want from Cross this season is a winning record. We're playing an all D-I schedule, no D-IIs, no NAIA. Cross needs to finish the season with at least ONE more win that losses.
I like Cross too, but if he can't start winning it will be time to turn on the hot seat for next season.

Your thoughts, When can/should/will we see/expect improved results from Scott Cross ? This is year three. And yes basketball is totally different than football when rebuilding, it can be done more quickly.

Ask Larry Blakeney, or Maestri for that matter. We're playing an all D-I schedule, no D-IIs, no NAIA. Blakeney and Maestri got lazy with recruiting. We all knew that. Cross is actually bringing in high character guys that are talented. How do you know we're playing an all D1 schedule this year? Not saying you're wrong, just curious since the schedule hasn't been released yet. Your thoughts, When can/should/will we see/expect improved results from Scott Cross ? This is year three. And yes basketball is totally different than football when rebuilding, it can be done more quickly. I think you're going to see a much different Troy team this year, success-wise and scheme-wise.
If you've ever seen Scott Cross' teams at UTA, he was able to win when he had a BIG center that was physical and could score in the paint. He usually would lose if he didn't have a good, big center.
He's not had a player that could do that since he got to Troy. Because of injuries or inexperience, he really only had Zay Williams and Nick Stampley last year that could play that position... and even though Williams is 6'9", he's under 200 lbs. and has trouble moving bigger post players out of the way to score. He's not a true center in Cross' scheme. And with Stampley at 6'6", he obviously isn't meant for that role (but still played really well).
But now, Cross has multiple guys that can be a true center. Efe Odigie (UTEP transfer) is a BIG center that can do exactly what Cross wants. He's 6'9" and 50 lbs heavier than Zay Williams. There is also Rifen Miguel (Ohio transfer).
So now.... that will give Cross a chance to move Zay Williams into more of a hybrid forward-center role, because that's where he should be with his size and shooting ability. It will also let us put Stampley into his normal role of being a power forward, where he's also more successful.
Add in the fact Cross brought in some talented point guards... that'll help the competition level.
Overall, I'd be surprised if you don't see a much tougher Troy team this coming season. I also think they'll be able to finish with a winning record, depending on the OOC schedule and injuries.

Well, I'm only going to count NCAA D-I teams for the wins and losses, and he has to have a winning record. Beating Northwest Georgia Bible College isn't going to cut it. I never suggested that the guys he was recruiting were of poor character, I asked if he can get them to gel and work together as team. Not to mention generally just learn Scott Cross Basketball.

I think he'll be able to get them to gel quicker than his players from the last two seasons. This is a much more mature team than the last two years, especially compared to last season when we had a bunch of freshman and immature dudes.
I believe having so many starters and bench players back is going to help the "gelling" process and understanding the system.

Both Men's and Ladies B'Ball have gelling challenges this year. HC Chanda had to replace 7 or 8 departing contributors.

Cross works hard. We couldn't throw it in the ocean last year with the exception of Stampley. Shut him down shooting, not hard to beat. If we get a couple of paint guys and perimeter shooters - we will be okay.

So far at Troy HC Scott Cross' teams have gone 9-22 (19) and 11-17 (20). How many years does Cross get to build a winning basketball program? This is a sport Troy has to get better and more consistent at.
I believe he's a good coach so hopefully we see a MUCH improved team and record this upcoming season.
