Wait til next year... it might be worse... The Ho's, Flo's & Joe's apologists will surely discount your expectations about the future.

A fellow Trojan fan brought up a point to me today. To paraphrase: this is going to be the new normal for Troy. Because we won't get another Blakeney that stays for a substantial period of time. We're either going to get a red hot coach that gets scooped up by a team from one of the Power 5 conferences or we're going to get a bust that rides out their contract or gets fired. But good ADs will string together multiple good hires and keep a strong program together. Arky St. went through five coaches in five years and still maintained a SBC Championship-caliber program.

What people are failing to realize is, the currentr state of the football program was all set in motion when John Hartwell left Troy. He was the only one who could stand toe-to-toe with the administration, and in particular Bookout, when it came to who John was going to hire, and what his budget would be. When John left, and Jeremy came in, Jeremy quickly learned he was in the AD position as a figurehead for the Administration. He had almost no say in the hiring of (The HC we don’t speak of), and that is why he left back to USM. (The HC we don’t speak of)'s hiring was a bottom line dollar decision. Once (The HC we don’t speak of) was hired, Jeremy was visibly detached from everything going on in the athletic department and was simply going through the motions. Had he been given the reins of the Athletic Department, I think Jeremy could have done a good job. The very first indication (The HC we don’t speak of) was not going to be a good coach was when in the first week, he was described as a "Player's Coach". That was enough to tell you he was not going to have any discipline like Neal instilled. So, it was inevitable that what is happening now would be the result. And it's going to take a long time to get back to where we were with Neal, if ever. trojanraid You've only two posts thus far but you indicate deeper inside knowledge of Troy Football and the Athletic program than most of us yahoos here at troy.boards. You understand the history of Troy Athletic's management, possibly before Hartwell as well. The AdMIN gave Hartwell's predecessor all the responsibility and no authority!! Troy teaches that faux pas in Management 101! I too, being an observant Yahoo (but no insider me), suspected (The HC we don’t speak of) hiring was budget-driven and mostly out of Jeremy McLain's hands. To wit: 1) Too little time/effort was afforded to reasonably vet/interview qualified candidates. The "committee" had a very good model to follow @ Hartwell's process that landed HCNB. CL was named HC just 9/10 days after Neal's announcement resulting in minimal 'buy-in" from knowledgeable followers of the Program. There was much more "out there" about CL than the process allowed. 2) Jeremy previously landed a seasoned HC for Men's BB. I don't believe for a minute that was "Even a blind squirrel could find a nut!" Strictly guessing but Jeremy was likely onto the USM position before Troy Football's HC search and mostly out of his hands. 3) When I heard of the Admin's heavy involvement in the hire process, I too, feared the priorities had changed since Hartwell. 4) Hiring a replacement for HCNB should have been simple. Neal had the Ship righted and sailing a great direction. So, find a guy who has worked in that kind of culture and surround him with like-minded staff. The hire decision resulted in neither. Apparently, the Admin-Heavy selection process got what they paid for! And I agree with you, it will likely be a Looong time to get back to where we were with HCNB. ADMIN needs to review their Goals and Priorities for Troy Athletics. If they want to be Division I, they gotta decide like a D-I program, or not. Welcome to the message board.

I dunno, if the (The HC we don’t speak of) hire was all about money, I think we could have found a cheaper hire.

Even if we are a place where a Coach comes and goes, you have to make the right hire and we clearly did not here. Looking back, the post that mentioned we did not take long enough to hire (The HC we don’t speak of) is spot on in my opinion. One must question why a guy was in like 10 different places in like 12 years. That makes no sense.
The one place I give (The HC we don’t speak of) credit is recruiting. I think we have good talent, as good as any in the league. Pretty sad to see it wasted.
Bottom line, the ship is not sinking, it's sunk. Time to let this cat go and start over. Raise ticket prices $5 or $10 bucks and pay for it. So what if we lose 1,000 people, initially. I promise you win them back when you start winning. 15K X 5 = $75K per game right? $450K per season. 15K X 10 = $150K per game or $900,000.
At this point, I am personally willing to pay more for a new hire. I am also willing to give less with the current leader as our head coach. Troy's football history is too good to sit around and watch this $h!+.

Akron is 0-13 with their coach. Call their AD and offer (The HC we don’t speak of) and we pay for his membership to Firestone CC.

ADMIN needs to review their Goals and Priorities for Troy Athletics. If they want to be Division I, they gotta decide like a D-I program, or not. Welcome to the message board. I agree with with a lot of what you say. A couple of things I might add to your comments; 1) Hartwell's predecessor, Steve Dennis, was the kind of AD this Administration prefers. Someone who was extracted from the "sidelines", and could glad-hand everyone, and be everybody's friend. You are correct in that he had no authority, but to be fair, that may not have been a bad thing in his case. His big shortcoming, though he could be everybody's friend, he really didn't have the ability cultivate new friends/donors or to "pull the trigger" when it came time to make the "ask" from donors (corporate and otherwise), so facility funding campaigns suffered and lagged. 2) Hartwell, on the other hand was an aberration to what the Admin wants. He did not kowtow to their wishes, and was skilled at making great headway on the things he prioritized. His years of experience as an Associate AD at an SEC school made him much more capable to deal with our Admin than any AD before or any since. And don't get me wrong, I think Brent is a fine person, and can potentially do very well in the AD position, but until he is faced with one of the BIG decisions, there's not a lot to judge on at the moment. I suspect his first big challenge is going to be dealing with (The HC we don’t speak of) after this season. As for his overall management and promotion, I like his management of the Department so far, and he is probably the best promoter since Johnny Williams, and ultimately is probably more skilled at it than Johnny. 3) As for the Administration's priorities and goals...that's difficult to ascertain. The football program has been the "Big Flashing Sign" for the University, and has attracted a lot of great publicity and attention over the years, garnering huge amounts of free "advertising" for a great product. However it came at a cost they were unfamiliar with having to pay. And, when it came down to having to shop again for a new "Cadillac", they chose to go with the "Chevrolet"...same company, just a lower cost version.
