Some of you on this board are more intimately involved in the TROY football program than others of us. Maybe it’s because you live in Troy, maybe it’s because you’re a donor/program sponsor, maybe it’s because you have just made it a point to be involved. Whatever the reason, some of you get to know the players and coaches as more than names and numbers. I never met John Schlarman but I know he was liked and respected by those who knew him. I say all this to say, if you didn’t know coach and you are a subscriber to The Athletic, you owe it to yourself to read Kyle Tucker’s piece, published October 16, about John. Having done so, I can say that as TROY supporters, we should feel honored to have had him associated with our program. I wish I had known him.

I met him when I was coaching HS ball and brought two players up for camp. A really good coach and even better person. Really sorry to hear this.

His oldest and my oldest are the same age. When they were here we would run into each other regularly. From day one I knew he was a great guy, as football started it was clear he was a great coach as well. Remember Troy was his first D1 job, Neal told LB about him after Matt Moore left the first time. After Schlar was here a few years then got the job to go to UK (find the memorial service and listen to NB tell that story) it was clear around here that he was by far one of the greatest assistants to ever walk on this campus. Anyone who ever talked to him knew his character was high as well.

The first time I met him was on Tailgate Terrace after a game. Back then some of the coaches and their families would go back to their tents after the games. My daughter and his kids were running around playing football. He was playing around with them and stopped and “coached” them all up on their stances. We talked some about football, life and family. He was a great coach and an even better man.
