The spring topic is coming up fast on campuses across the nation. On some previous threads I placed some numbers in an attachment to kind of show where we were as of the beginning of May. Now we are on the cusp of some really high numbers of cases that are scaring the public. There are so many conversations about these it makes one dizzy to say the least. There are a few things that are obvious when looking at the numbers. Unfortunately, it is not probable that the powers that be will wait till August 15th to make a final determination. What we do see here in Florida and in Texas and Arizona are the upswing that is consistent to what happened in the early spots. Basically, we have a will have a six week upswing with a concave slope down (once your area begins rapid case increase). Essentially, most areas will reach at least 1500 per hundred (or more) thousand population of cases. Deaths will vary dependent on virus attenuation and age of population. South Carolina, Florida and Alabama are at around 850/100k cases now. I Florida we are in a huge upslope and by August 15th most areas will be out of the surge. I have attached the information if you are interested Oklahoma is not yet in the upswing but by end of summer most of the country should be leveled off quite well. I have attached the information if you are interested Oklahoma is not yet in the upswing but by end of summer most of the country should be leveled off quite well. View AttachmentView AttachmentAt my facility, we are testing everyone who is scheduled for surgery or scheduled for any out patient procedure. We are also testing patients that are being admitted for other reasons. Because of this, we’ve seen a big spike in number of cases. Do you want to guess what we aren’t seeing? We aren’t seeing a corresponding increase in hospitalizations. For the past month, the total number of COVID(+) cases has held steady at around half the number we had at the mid April, early May peak. As the # cases has remained pretty stable, the # of ICU cases has decreased. In keeping with what we are seeing nationwide, the number of deaths has also fallen drastically. While I don’t know why these facts are what they are, I have some ideas (no need to go into that here), I do know that, even though total # of cases is up, we aren’t in a crisis like in the spring. Like the common cold and the flu, both of which are caused by viruses, this thing is here to stay. It’s not going away and we are going to have to decide if we shut down the world permanently. We don’t do that for the cold and flu, and I don’t see that being a long term solution for dealing with this thing. Don’t interpret what I’ve written to mean I think this virus is something to be ignored or that it isn’t serious. For certain people and demographics, it’s deadly. I’m just putting information out there to help you all get a picture of what’s going on in this part of the world.

We and almost all surrounding hospitals are at capacity. Just a mere function of the huge case upswing. We will come thru but right now not very good. We will come thru! When hurricane Michael hit in Oct of 2018. Our world in the panhandle was upside down. I did not even remember to turn on the game till late fourth quarter. It was Liberty ugh!!! Right now can’t wait to just get past August 15th so maybe again think about football. Like Bubba said: it is better and from a virulent point of view it is a LOT better maybe by a factor of 10 buy it still sucks. Let’s just look forward to football, family, and friends in the not so distant future and thank God for all of those!

We were almost always at capacity pre-Michael and frequently on diversion. Post- Michael, those two conditions are continuous states of operation. That’s why it’s such a big deal to have a surge in patient load. This nation’s health care infrastructure, both from a physical facility and human resource standpoint, is beyond maxed out.

This has not been a good week! Every day that passes I see the 2020 Fall football season slipping further away. Yesterday we heard about Stanford cutting about a third of their athletic programs and the decision regarding football made by The Ivy League. Just finished reading this article: Going, going, ...

WOW, I take my afternoon nap and the dominoes begin falling ... Big Ten announcement this afternoon will lead to other announcements because "13 other conferences will have out-of-conference games against the Big Ten canceled." Feeling especially sorry for Friends in the MAC (10 games gone)!
