I3 takeaways from Southern Miss, Mississippi State gameeu.hattiesburgamerican.com/story/sports/2019/09/07/3-takeaways-southern-miss-mississippi-state-game/2247044001/IMHO: USM Front7 is aggressive, I think this will be the key, Troy OL vs USM DL and also how the Troy secondary will perform in the game (I know our DL will show up, they will have to pressure the USM QB nonstop). If we can handle the USM DEF, and can pressure their QB, we should win this game. USM OL is not as experienced as ours (but they have played two games now) and their QB is just average when under pressure. They lost their starting RB vs Alcorn St which is a big loss, Perkins is now playing for USM btw. I think their top WR will be back after a suspension however. USM can move the ball, and they will. Originally, I thought this would be rather a low scoring game. I am not so sure anymore - I think we will have to score in the low 30s to win this game. Also, remember Parade All-American and Gatorade AL POY Jaylond Adams (Adamsville, AL)? Originally committed to USM, decommitted and committed to Troy on signing day - but his mother refused to sign his LOI. He is a starter now and also a dangerous KR/PR. Check the first video. Week1 USM vs Alcorn State Week2 USM vs Miss St - coming - - - - - This is developing into a great rivalry, and every time we play each other it involves some kind of drama. Troy vs Southern MissOverall FBS record: 1-1 Past games: 2008 New Orleans Bowl, Troy vs USM, 27-30, OT-> USM blocks a Troy FG and wins the game in OT despite losing star WR DeAndre Brown with a freak injury early in the game 2016 Troy at USM, 37-31-> Beating USM (in rainy Hattiesburg) was the turning point for us and the first signature win in a while at this point before beating LSU and Nebraska Next scheduled games: 2019, 2021, 2024, 2028, 2029

And this is how Lindy's ranks USM:
NCAA: #87 Southern Miss (Tough early schedule, but then should compete in CUSA West) Troy ranked at #71
Conference Pick: CUSA West, #3
Top NFL Talent (CUSA): 1. WR Quez Watkins (Speed, hands make him a legitimate threat)
Honor Roll, CUSA Most accurate passer: Jack Abraham, QB, USM Best hands: Quez Watkins, WR, USM Most dangerous deep threat: Quez Watkings, WR, USM
ALL-C-USA Team OFF- First team: WR Quez Watkins OFF - First team: OL Arvin Fletcher DEF - First team: DL Jacques Turner DEF - First team: DB Ky'el Hemby DEF - Second team: LB Racheem Boothe

Not that a win is are or none against them. However do feel this is a crucial lynchpin game for 10 or more wins. That is due to how season set up after that. A win then Akron and tough one against Ark St a real good spring board.

I’m really excited for this one. I love it when we have quality opponents at home.

I love it when we have quality opponents at home. Same here! NC State next year! (NC State will be a Top25 team next year with tons of returning starters, can’t wait for this one)

Still not sure about a lot of how the game will go. There's very little to go by so far as Troy is concerned. I will say this: Campbell had 8 returning starters on each side of the ball. They were the #1 FCS passing defense last season only allowing 122 passing yards per game. We had 282 yards with two guys stealing the show. That's impressive to me. They ranked 6th in sacks allowed with less than one sack per game, and gave up 5 vs Troy. Brandon Hall showed he could make in game halftime adjustments. After giving up 104 yards at the half, the Troy defense held the Camels to -34 yards in the 3rd, and 68 total yards midway through the 4th.
I'm not sure how the Troy offensive line will hold vs Southern Miss, but the Troy defense looks to be the real deal. USM didn't do a lot to impress me on offense in either game they played outside of garbage time. Versus Alcorn State (middle of the pack FCS), most of their 38 points came from special teams and field goals. They played very poorly in the first halves of both games. We need to get ahead early and not let them back in the game. In their game versus Miss State, there were lots of holes in their secondary. Miss State had ten receivers make a completion. We have some guys that will be able to make plays if our offensive line can hold.
Things Troy needs work on: Special teams return game, dropped balls by guys who need to play a role in our offense, and pass protection. We torched the Camels in the passing game, but the two sacks were concerning. We play a much, much better defense this week.

I don't wish any permanent injury, but if somebody gives Momma's boy Jaylond Adams a welcome to Troy snot bubble tackle, I would be entertained.

I've got a taste for some Mississippi fried chicken. Tomorrow we get some payback for their arrogance in '08.

I hope we drag them up and down the field! It’s funny to me how “some” of their fans think they are so above Troy. I mean let’s be honest...they are 3rd fiddle in Mississippi! And that ain’t saying much! Now I respect what they have done as a program. but I’m just over some of those fans. Hopefully we can hush that nonsense come Saturday! Havoc!!! Go Trojans!

I've seen mostly the opposite from their fans. Nearly all of them are on verge of signing a petition to have their coach fired, and very few think they will beat Troy. I think it's going to be a close game, but many of them do not.

Been that way for years!

They were insufferable during bowl week back in 2008. Not all of them were, but the 3 or 4 worse ones could give UAB fans lessons in unwarranted arrogance and obnoxiousness. That's saying a lot. Speaking of those fans, I haven't seen a single Southern Miss fan on here discussing this game. Strange.

To be fair, this place was a ghost town until The Campbell game.

My understanding is the North End Zone is sold out for this game! And I understand this is the first time the North End Zone is sold out. If true, and I have no way to tell you it is in fact true - that's really cool!
It's going to be a great day in Troy tomorrow! Tell everyone to welcome Southern Miss fans to Troy! Great regional opponent!

Great regional opponent! AD expecting 25,000-28,000 actual attendance (incl 5,000 students) depending on how many fans USM will bring (he mentioned this on Trojan Talk). Looks like 27,000+ tickets sold so far...considering all this, I think attendance will be 27,000+

So if actual attendance will be 27,000+, think we hit 30,000 sold?
