When one signs up with Me 23 or whatever, one has a choice to share results with specific databases, or not. Only a moron with a history of crime would check 'Yes". Murderer = mOron!

JB and Tracie were in my class at Northview High, and JB's mother lives in the trailer park owned by my husband's family. She claims it was actually a relative (a brother?) who sent his dna to the genealogy site or whatever that caused the match that led to Coley. Not sure if that's true or not.
Their murder was devastating and scary. I hope justice is finally found for these girls.

According to information coming from the Ozark PD today, this arrest has been some 3 months in the making.
The profile from the DNA obtained from the victim(s) at the time of the crime was sent to a company in VA named Parabon. This company does genetic research and specializes in creating genealogy trees from submitted DNA. This company was able to identify relatives of the suspect from DNA samples the relatives had submitted for genealogy reports. Once they identified these close relatives, they submitted the names to the Ozark PD. Following further investigation by the Ozark PD, they identified a man they felt was the likely donor of the DNA found at the crime scene. They were subsequently able to obtain a DNA sample from him, which Parabon identified as a match to the crime scene DNA. This result was then verified by the Alabama State Crime Lab. Two independent agencies identified the DNA of Coley McCraney as matching the crime scene DNA. This process was the same process used recently in California to identify a serial killer known as the Golden Gate Killer. All of the above information is information that has been given out by the Ozark PD, none of it is speculation or rumor.
The bottom line: if you think you might ever commit a crime, tell mama and 'em not to be submitting no DNA to find out if great Granpa came from Ireland or Scotland. If you have younguns that might one day step over the line of legal behavior don't be sending off no swab to see if you're likely to go bald before you're 65. Just wait it out.

My youngest son knew JB, she dated one of his best friends for a while. While I didn't know her, JB had been at my house a time or two. My son also dated a good friend of JB, so he knew her well. One of my daughters in law attended Northview and was a grade behind JB and Tracey. She knew them both. The sister of my supervisor was either at the party these girls were suppose to attend or she planned to go and changed her mind (I can't remember which). I could go on, but If you were in high school or had kids in high school in Dothan in the late 90's, these murders probably impacted you in some way. Like everyone else, If this suspect is guilty, I hope he is convicted and the Beasley and Hawlett families can obtain a sense of justice. It's past time for the person who killed these young ladies to be held accountable.
