So Troy open's the game up against #13 Mississippi State by blowing open a 8-3 lead in the 4th inning and chasing off a few Mississippi State pitchers. Then, Troy's coaching staff makes some bone head moves by leaving some pitchers in that aren't being very effective and are giving up walks and hits to MSU, which gives Mississippi State a chance to come back and tie the game up at 8-8. Cory Gill, who's probably the best pitcher on the roster, was in control during the innings he was in except for inheriting some existing base runners who wound up scoring from the previous pitcher, but he got out of the inning without giving up a lead. After that, Cory Gill was on a roll, striking out 3 of the 8 batters he faced in only 1.2 innings of work...
but yet again, Smartt and company make the move to bring in Marc Skinner, who has had a bad tendency to not pitch well in tight games toward the latter half of the season. And of course, in just 1 inning of work, Skinner gives up a walk, three hits, and two runs to give Mississippi State the 10-8 lead and the win.
BIG bone head move by the Troy coaching staff to lift Gill just so Skinner can have a chance at another save. Gill was rolling. It's things like this that make me wonder what the heck these coaches are thinking. This has happened a few times this season where the hot pitcher is lifted just so Skinner can come in. That's just flat out unacceptable.

Skinner was coming off back to back shutout appearences. No reason place all the blame on the guy.
Also, I find it rather peculiar that you gave no attaboys or congrats to this team after taking care of business against ULM to secure a first round bye in the tourney, but make every effort to point out flaws against the 13th ranked team in the country.
Yea the loss sucks, but conference play is what matters. I'm much more focused on trying to take 2 of 3 from South than a midweek game that means nothing besides a few fair-weather fans getting to post on Facebook.
Your negativity and consistent bashing of Troy athletics has grown tiresome.

Your negativity and consistent bashing of Troy athletics has grown tiresome. I would expect that Troy would be able to sweep ULM, the worst team in the Sun Belt. Besides, I haven't seen anyone on here give any attaboys since the Jax State game. I don't want to be negative, but come one. Let's use logic here. Would you take out your hottest pitcher, who was in for less than 2 innings and was fooling Miss State with his breaking balls, just to put in Skinner who has had a few bad outings recently? I don't blame Skinner as much as I blame the coaching staff for not using their heads on that one. On that note, I fully believe this team has the capability to go into the Sun Belt tournament and win the whole thing. The starting pitching rotation has been adjusted for the better, the bats are starting to fire up, and everything looks like it's starting to gel. But Mark Smartt has got to make better decisions with his pitching staff. Even Coach Pierce, whenever he brought in a relief pitcher, would continue to let them pitch into the 9th inning if they were on fire. Relief guys like Ryan Sorce, William Teal, Thomas Austin, and Andrew Dickinson pitched quite a few games in relief and wound up closing games out because they were pitching so well.

Not at all shocked by this particular negative Nancy post.
Even better is the title blaming the pitching staff and then flipping to blame the coaches when questioned.
No wonder people openly laugh at this guy's posts.

Also, Cardinal you might wanna statcheck.
Out hottest pitcher is Andrew Crane....ya know the guy who has 36 consecurive scorless innings.
But you probably don't know who it is since you don't watch conference games.

This time of year coaching decisions related to pitching are not made in the vacuum of one game. We have a conference series that starts a day early followed by the conference tournament. Beating State would have been nice, but is most definitely not the most important game over the next ten days! I am going to trust Coach Smartt and Coach Phillips to make decisions that put us in the best position to win the conference tournament and go to an NCAA Regional.

Our only shot at a regional would be to win conference. I don't know if we did beat Miss State and finish second through fourth in the tournament if we go to a regional. That's with beating two top 10 teams on the road. If a few of the close games went our way maybe a different story.

I understand the desire to see Gill stay in the game and see how long you can ride with him before bringing in Skinner. But at the same time we have to consider having him as fresh and rested as possible going into the final conference series with USA and then into the conference tourney.
Part of that game was just bad luck. By that I mean when Gill was facing Rooker with two outs and runners on first and second base, Rooker hit a two-strike pitch (a good slider that was low and on the outside of the plate) to shallow/mid centerfield. Our CF was playing so deep (respecting Rooker's power: He is at the top or near the top of NCAA in HRs, doubles, and RBI) that even though he broke in quickly on the ball he couldn't make the catch to get the third out and keep the score at 8-5 in Troy's favor. Had our CF been playing at normal depth or even just 2-3 steps in from where he was, he makes a relatively routine running catch for out #3 and we keep the three run lead going into the top of the 7th inning. The truth is that Gill made a good pitch and Rooker just made good two strike swing and poked it into centerfield and our CF was understandably playing a good hitter deep and couldn't make the play. Baseball is a funny game that way. That one swing/play changed the momentum of the game and it could have easily gone in our favor. But as much as we want to beat the big boys, I would rather set the pitching staff up for a good run in the conference tourney and beat a "big boy" team in an NCAA regional game.
I am looking forward to the rest of the season as I think we are playing much better baseball the last few weeks with our hitting starting to come around. we have the potential to make some noise if we continue to play well.

Smartt yes, Osbey no, should not be in the rotation next year. He had a chance and proved can not get it done in conference against the big boys

While it would have been nice to have beaten MSU, THE most important games of our season starts in Mobile this weekend.
