Why would they? People just complain when they do post As a parent of a SOTS member this is absolutely true. The same people that get their jollies making fun of everybody that isn't in their clique are the same ones who insult the band. And they think they are the superior fans, they are a discrace is what they are. These young men and women put in countless hours of practice each week, till 10 pm on Thursday night, brave 100 degree heat in the games in wool jackets and are in uniform for 5-6 hours on game days, pay to have their uniform cleaned, buy their helmet, shoes and gloves and instrument, represent the university at hs band clinics and parades and do it all for a measly $300 scholarship while we pay our athletes to attend school now and pay 100% of their school. Shame on you fans.

I don't see a lot of negativity directed towards the band. Certainly not as much that is directed towards certain sports and staff members.
On the band note, the pep band in New Orleans was off the chain!! The brought it hard at all three games and in the lobby of the hotel. They were great at keeping the crowd energized!!

On the band note, the pep band in New Orleans was off the chain!! The brought it hard at all three games and in the lobby of the hotel. They were great at keeping the crowd energized!! To the life of me I don't understand the ideas that the SOTS is "ignored" or disrespected! To began with, many football fans simply are not there for the music. Thats an unpopular fact. That's why most go to the rest rooms/concessions at that time. That's not negative, it doesn't mean they disrespect the bands, it is what it is. If fans were at a band or music concert and the football team came in I suspect you would get the same results but in reverse. Folks there for that specific event are focused on that event at that time, doesn't mean they dislike the players there during the music event or what they are doing. You have some fans, like me, that loves BOTH and try to watch and respond to both, however if I need to go under the bleachers it will be at halftime. I've watched Troy play since 1961 and I could count on one hand the negative comments I've heard in all those years and most of those were years ago but couldn't count high enough all the POSITIVE comments I've heard in those years about our bands. I comment to my FSU daughter and son in law that there is no better band anywhere better than the SOTS. She now agrees! I've had many friends in the SOTS so to disrespect them makes no sense. I've even asked the last two AD's to please get the drama dept. together with the Music dept. to build on the SOTS pre game program with a Trojan on a horse, etc., because they could really fire up a crowd like they already do with their entry and it might increase the excitement of a game thus attendance! Just watch what Chief Osceola does to fans at FSU. As to difference in scholarships.....the same exist at every university between departments and what they pay. You have a huge variety of programs giving scholarships and each is different for different reasons. They all work their butts off in their respective events. As to the SOTS, maybe it's because there are over 300 in the band as opposed to 20-100 in each athletic sport and since they don't bring in the funds as an organization that many sports do the funds are just not available but I'm guessing! What about the cheerleaders, mascot, etc.. I know kids who played athletics, was cheerleaders and in the band for years who never got a cent of scholarship money. Fair? Sure it was. They were there because they loved doing it, it was fun, they wanted to be there and it was a choice they made knowing the financial structure. Life will never be equal!

I've never asked for equal, I've never asked for more money, all I ever wanted was a little fun out of the whole thing. People complain on here because the band doesn't play what they want, they don't play at the right time or don't even want them there. Is that the minority of people? Yea, probably. Doesn't make it any easier during camp to know that most of the student population hates the band for things that they can't control.
Does the band matter during a game? Probably not as much as people think, but, when someone in band screws up, the world will hear about it. Athlete's get in trouble it's ok, they're kids, it'll work out, but I got chewed out by the band director for not even breaking a rule.
As to your example, the problem is that there is no support. Go to a band concert at Troy and see just how many people are there and ask how many of them are music majors/parents of the ones performing.

Go to a band concert at Troy and see just how many people are there and ask how many of them are music majors/parents of the ones performing. You are preaching to the choir. I'm a huge fan of the SOS! I just shared what I see as the constant issue on here about how much the scholays differ and I was not aiming that to anyone in particular. The band plays a positive part of any athletic contest, just as any fan support does. The cheerleaders, mascot and all other non playing support groups add their share. There's no way to accurately measure "how much" each contribute. All are a part of the whole as it should be. Not sure what response is expected from fans to show their approval. I, for one, stay in my seat at halftime for the band performance if Mother Nature and Father Time allows me to do so and I stand for fanfare, sing when appropriate until my friends say they can't stand my voice any longer and clap at the end. However, I do nothing special for the cheerleaders or mascot or soldiers in the airplane or the cannon shooters. Goes that mean I don't respect their contributions as well? No! If you read this or any site like this you will quickly realize that complaining about something is the reason some attend. As to students support of the band in concert, yep you are right, they don't show! But I go to BB games and they don't show there either or softball, or track or golf or rodeo when we had it. As I look back over my youth when I attended Troy and I regret the many joys I missed by failing to enjoy the many opportunities offered there but like today's students, my priorities were different back then. Doesn't mean you are disrespected it's just that these activities don't carry the value to some that we wish they did. Look at our frustration at football and BB attendances. Sad! How do we change that? Well, as some on here regularly share, WIN! Everybody loves a winner! True fans love their university no matter they win or lose. How do you get more respect for the SOS who works VERY hard day after day year after year? I'm not sure. You already are a "Winner"! Can't do much better than that. You support your university just as you should and that's all you can expect. I think just accept it for what it is. I feel your pain, I played on a team at Troy that won 3 championships in 4 years and our own university refused to send us to regionals or even give us the letter awards we earned on year. I can relate to feeling unappreciated! Life goes on my friend! Just know there are a TON of fans out there that think the SOS is SECOND TO NONE!

I played every sport there was in HS except basketball. I can play the game but wasn't going to make our HS team. Football, baseball, track and golf I lettered in. Played football at Troy. I can't hum a tune and my daughter says I'm musically hopeless. But having a daughter who wasn't athletic but a honor student and who did three years of middle school band, four years of high school band and two years in the SOTS, I have come to both admire and respect these band kids. They get called nerds, whimps etc and dedicate a tremendous amount of time to a thankless endeavor. My daughters HS packed the stands for games but at band competitions (some in 100 degree heat) there might be 100 people there. The SOTS sacrifices a lot for Troy. Don't think it's hard? I challenge anyone to wear that hot uniform in late Aug-Sept and memorize precise formations and steps all while playing a instrument...and for what? A $300 scholarship that doesn't cover the cost of the uniform and dry cleaning and for some of the girl members to be groped and hit on by drunk frats at the game and to be told by some posters that they don't matter and who cares. The SOTS is a part of Troy football. Yes, most people don't come to a game for the band but I bet you ask any first time attendee to a Troy game and I bet they say " your band is awesome"

Troystet, you are correct, there are students at every school that have derogatory things to say about many entities. They don't care the hours the people spent practicing, working, dedicated to their task/skill they just like to spew negatives. It's about all they can accomplish in those areas. I spent 391/2 years in the school business and I can attest it happens everywhere, elementary school, high school, everywhere! Usually by kids that couldn't match the efforts of those participating if they wanted to. At the schools I taught and coached at I considered it more an expression of jealously than anything else. That's why I have issues with those that complain constantly about something they never did!!Even with young kids, a comeback at those who do work to accomplish a task (sports/music/whatever) is shown by always finding fault with those that do try! You accept it as youthful immaturity but with college age kids and heaven forbid adults it's inexcusable. My daughter was a cheerleader, my wife was in the band and both will tell you you simply ignore that group. Any way, those that can...usually do, those that can't...usually talk (I could write complain)! I wish there was a way to guarantee the SOS got the credit they deserve but look at the ladies BB. Going to regionals and what was the average attendance at their games this yea when the guys didn't play? Sad!

I know what y'all are saying, honestly, I agree. It just sucks that there's no support for the band, at least, not much that's seen. The band isn't invited to signing events, they're not glorified when they perform at a hospital, etc. I love my school and went to a lot of events in my five years at Troy. I opened the Arena with a win against Miss St., I watched our Rodeo team win countless events, and the reason I didn't go to some events was because of classes, band practice or performances. I guess it's more along the lines of the sacrifices don't stop at giving up Saturdays. We're expected to perform for the Chancellor for whatever, march in multiple parades, have multiple concerts and there was never any thanks given. Just a peeve of mine. As for being glass half empty, only on this subject. I try to be positive on every other subject.

Sadly, they are often taken for granted by fans UNLESS they don't show then you get complaining from some. You would think it's someone's job to see that proper recognition and thanks us given to all participants whatever the activity. With my wife in the band, I was made to understand the hours they put in and I suspect with a band the quality of the SOS it's much more. Just take one guys word for it , an old athlete who couldn't play a note if his life depended on it, I don't miss halftime shows or pregame (I LOVE FANFARE) and I continue to hope someone at Troy will see the possibilities of a pregame scenario that has the same overtones and factions (Trojan on a real horse with a grand entry accompanied by what the SOS does now plus some choreography to spruce it up and accolades will follow I'll bet.....and maybe even attendance! Now I never miss the beginning of an FSU game just to watch Osceola, Renegade and the FSU band! Fans are a fickle bunch and often fail to recognize the obvious. I'm one of them I'm sure. Never gave much thought about cheerleaders role until this conversation as an example of my failures. We all do it!

You will know very quickly which is which!! BTW, SOTS Rocks! Hat's off to the hard work and sacrifice both instructors and students make for the cause!! You confuse a glass with accepting mediocrity. Troystet. You are not "accepting mediocrity" just because you don't come on here and point fingers, call names or complain constantly about something not going your/our way. It's not a life or death situations here. Maybe you've never had your own health issues that made you prioritize the important things in life. Some people get up in the morning and look out their "window" to see what's wrong with they world, some choose to see what's good. There's nothing wrong with that, it the way people are but negative get old. I'll bet every person on this site wants us to win as badly as you do. You know darn well I want us to win every game. It's how we deal with not winning that makes us different. Every game has a loser, only one guy WINS a bike race for example. You race bicycles , you know that's true. That doesn't make all the others losers.....does it? I've been part of teams as a player and a coach that lost and I was never ashamed to have been a part of them. Yes, I would rather have won but every game has a "loser", that's the idea of a CONTEST! I'll bet you've been part of losing teams before. Life does go on. Being very very disappointed is an absolutely proper emotion to have about our team at times but when all is said and done ITS JUST A GAME! You get the feeling here if you don't raise a ruckus every time a team loses or has a losing season or more you will be branded a pacifist. The one thing that turns me off most about 'Bama fans are they make it bigger than it is! They win a lot but I still prefer to be a Troy fan even given our record. They often belittle those that they beat and I hope we never carry it that far. There is a huge difference in what they do and our "whup Jax St"! Always thought Nebraska showed class beyond expectations at their home games when they stood and clapped for the opponents as they exited at halftime. They understand the purpose of the contest it would seam. On any game day when we lose I'm an VERY unhappy camper. Ask those around me. I can yell with the best of them and often in frustration but when it's over.....it's over and hope runs eternal! That makes me wrong, not a true fan, an acceptor of mediocrity? I think not!

As an adult, with 60+ years under the (expanda) belt and countless years as business supervisor/owner/manager, Dad, Husband, Volunteer leader, Church office holder, organizational and events supporter, teaching/instructional roles etc, etc; I've come to learn that satisfaction lies in the DOING, not the receiving credit or recognition for the passion, time and effort. I suppose this is the path to "maturity" and self-awareness; valuable goals for personal satisfaction!
I think the process started in high school, athletic and leadership endeavors that created positive results but frequently received little recognition or reward. Then college, my gosh, the Dean's list was about the best it got; when I EARNED it!
College is a great venue to learn the realities of life, there is not always a Blue Ribbon or "Attaboy" placque at the end of the day... sometimes just the personal "feel good" that comes from caring, participating, creating and leading others.
IF you are partipating in SOTS, football etc ONLY for the Blue Ribbon or recognition, take stock of why you REALLY do what you do. You are GOOD at what you do because you have PASSION for it, PRIDE in how you do it and self-satisfaction for your effort. Everythng else is just icing on the cake!
Hey, we actually gotta thread going on the SOTS message board!! And I couldn't carry a sousaphone or a tune in a bucket if life depended on it!!
Go SOTS... GO TROJANS!!!

As an old alum, I have to tell you that the Sound is the one thing that returns me back to my college days. I can close my eyes and be back in the 70's all over again. I have ZERO musical talent so have a great appreciation for the efforts made by these young people who put in countless hours mastering their craft. Our Game Day Experience would not be the same at TROY if not for the SOTS. Their participation before, during and after games is a shear pleasure to enjoy. We are truly blessed to have them at our games, during football season as well as the pep-band during basketball season. Just ask the coaching staff what our band means to them.....
I think we can ALL agree that Troy has the best band in the state, and that they (along with our alumni band at Homecoming) are a huge addition to our campus, to the student body, as well as to us supporters, fans and alumni!!!
To any current or former SOTS musicians and supporting staff, I want to give you a special shout-out! Thank you one and all.
GO SOTS and GO TROY!

They add so much to the whole experience of being on campus! Funny, the first time I ever go to hear/see a half-time show was the first home game after I graduated ... since I was in the locker room during half time. Just amazing. Always knew they worked really hard. Then, my daughter's first roommate was in the band ... omg ... hours upon hours! Now, my niece is a majorette. They are all so committed! If anyone connected to the SOTS reads this ... I apologize if you've ever felt unappreciated, or I think maybe taken for granted! You guys are awesome. I can't imagine what it would be like to be at a game and not have the SOTS. Thank you all! GO SOTS and GO TROY!!

Hi! Perhaps you would like to hear from a current member of the band?
Firstly, THANK YOU for supporting the Sound of the South! We appreciate you!
We are typically not "in it" for the recognition. We love music. We love band. And we love Troy. We realize that almost all fans are there for the football game. (That's why it's called a football game and not a marching band concert.) But we also know there are several fans there for the band (either alumni or family members).
Now, don't get me wrong... We DO love to hear people say "thank you." When an athletic director or a head coach comes to practice to personally thank us or say, "You rock," it means the world to us. And for those of you that don't know, the band department has an INCREDIBLE relationship with the athletic department. You will NOT find this relationship at any other university.
Our biggest fan, Chancellor Hawkins, ALWAYS talks to the band personally at the beginning of each football season. And he always gets thunderous applause when he tells us that we always win the "Battle of the Bands."
So if you see one of us band kids on campus, say "thank you." It really does mean a lot to know that our work doesn't go unnoticed.
BLOW SOTS!

Counting all the games this old goat has attended through the years hearing a BUNCH of "atta boys" and not hear a single negative in years says a ton! Yes, it's a football game first but for most fans the SOS puts icing on that cake. I just wish we could get SOMEONE.....ANYONE to partner with the music department and design a pregame program equal to those at FSU (Osceola and Renegade), TTU (Red Raider in his black horse), OKLAHOMA (Sooner wagon), Auburn (eagle fly in) etc.. Being Trojans makes it a natural if you have a smidgeon of imagination! Not much could be done if we were Beavers, Ducks, Blazer, Buckeye, Tide or even Red Wave, but being TROJANS, with the history that goes with it, BEGS to be on display. PLEASE, have it ready by the grand reopening of the stadium!

Why would they? People just complain when they do post SOTS and its supporters/fans have their own sub-board. They can post 1,000s of times a day in here if they want. Just leave the sports sections free from music talk. Go band. woot-woot.
