ATLANTA -- Behind a fantastic effort from Ty Gordon, KJ Simon and Desmond Williams the Troy Trojans handed Georgia State its first home loss of the season Saturday afternoon at the GSU Sports Arena, earning a wild 84-78 victory over the Panthers. Down 72-65 with 5:10 to play, the Trojans (9-15, 5-8 Sun Belt) outscored Georgia State 13-6 down the stretch to earn the series-sweep over the Panthers. The key shot in the stretch was delivered by Davion Thomas, whose corner 3-pointer with 53 ticks remaining gave Troy a 77-74 lead. HEAD COACH SCOTT CROSS: "Our guys hit shots today. Des and Ty both had awesome games. And then KJ hit a couple of threes for us. Nick [Stampley] and Tree [Thomas] did a great job holding down the fort for us. KJ and Tahj [Small] grabbed rebounds and hit shots. It was a collective team effort for us. It was definitely the biggest win of the year. Georgia State is a top-100 team in the NET ratings, Ken Pom ratings and just about every system you can find. So it's the biggest win for us. I told them after the game that adversity reveals your character, and today's effort showed the character of this basketball team. I'm so glad they brought their best effort tonight. We needed it every single possession tonight. I'm super proud of them because they played together. We went through a little cold spell in the second half where it looked like we weren't moving defensively. For us to do this on the road against a quality team is a huge step forward for this program."

Have not seen the mens team play a lot this year but when I have, they are pretty disciplined imo - have seen them play a couple of times and they were just over matched - hope they finish this season strong and can build for next year
Would like to see more fans at both womens and mens games
We all talk about the great arena - it is great - but it is also empty
Still proud to be a Trojan

Winning will bring the crowd. Data proves that.
From 1999-2004, when Don Maestri had Troy dominating the A-Sun conference, Troy's attendance spiked and we had some really good crowds. We had five straight winning seasons, won the A-Sun title 4 times, went to the the NCAA Tourney and went to the NIT. Here's the average attendance during those years:
2000 - 1,470
2001 - 1,699
2002 - 2,481
2003 - 2,794
2004 - 2,801
And that was in the Concrete Box!
I believe if Cross can get the basketball program back to winning, plus Brent Jones and Scott Cross' knack for reaching out to the students and the community, we can see Trojan Arena have great crowds like Sartain Hall used to.
The women's program has seen a surge in attendance since Rigby has gotten them winning. Granted, the women's attendance can still look bad sometimes, but it's definitely higher than it was before Rigby took over. I remember some games there were literally 70 people in attendance while Murphy was HC. Just last year, the women's team led the Sun Belt in average attendance for the first time ever.

I have wondered why we drew better in Sartain and funny as this sounds...I think it was location. You could walk right out of a dorm into Sartain. I attended my daughters SEUS Band function in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and walked next door from Smith to Sartain during a break and watched some hoops. While doable in the Arena I would have a little bit of a hike to get there. Maybe winning will get attendance up, but the problem is even 2,500 people the arena isn't half full and looks like nobody is there

I saw students joke about the size of Memorial Stadium right before it was rebuilt, too.
"They ought to make it smaller. Huh huh huh."
Then we started winning.

It is not much further from the dorms to Trojan Arena than it is to Sartain location. Also, a good portion of the student body doesn't even live on campus.

Get the students interested and excited, and get the basketball team winning, and the students will come no matter how far they have to walk.

My point was I was just there to be with her for the SEUS function. I just walked outside (boredom lol) and saw that a game was going on at Sartain and walked over. Probably wouldn't have noticed the Arena without checking. Sure more enjoyable watching a game in the Arena than the old box also.
