I was wondering if/when he was going to transfer. He's got talent, but I don't think he had the stuff to beat out any of the other top 3 QB's. Gunnar Watson has already gotten playing time, Parker McNeil is a JUCO All-American, and Jacob Free was an SEC recruit... and then the freshman Kyle Toole was ranked as the #34 pro-style QB in the nation... I don't think there was going to be much opportunity for Screws. This!

QB Gavin Screws is in the portal now... What the heck is going on? I spoke with a couple of players about two weeks ago and they said he (Gavin Screws) would be entering the Portal due to Gunner would be the QB in 2020. He had fallen to number three or number four on the depth chart. They've had half a spring no fall ball yet. Are Parker and Free that far behind Gunnar Watson? I'd like to think at the very least the JUCO All-American has a shot.

I imagine fall camp will be very entertaining at QB. I imagine Troy probably has the most talented QB room of all G5 schools when you look at the roster from top to bottom. Especially this fall when Toole arrives

I’ve been down here 12 years now and the HS talent here is pretty remarkable. Hoping they can create a TX-Troy pipeline. 7/32 1st round picks this year we’re TX high school football players.

DT Ricky Samuel has entered the tranfer portal. Big hit as he was one of our highest rated defensive players when he signed.

Samuel brings the total number to 19 who have entered the portal. As troyfan87 mentioned, Perry is the only one that has announced a destination. What bothers me the most is that Samuel makes the fifth player from the 2019 Signing Class to enter the portal. That means about 25% of that signing class has left ... it was only 15 months ago when they signed and we were all pumped by this article Troy Football Bolsters Top Signing Class in School History.Missing the good old days when players arrived on campus and you expected most of them to spend years on campus barring unforeseen circumstances like academics, family issues or injury

Eventually these players are going to see how foolish it is to enter the transfer portal. It's already inundated with hundreds of players. Most coaches are going to go after high school recruits versus the those in the transfer portal, unless they're trying to fill some depth on their roster.
Herm Edwards, the head coach at Arizona State, said himself that coaches have to filter portal players more because you've gotta figure out why they're transferring in the first place, and then see if they would even be productive players for them.
Most times, these coaches don't even have a relationship with these portal players; they haven't gotten to know them, unlike the high school players these coaches have been recruiting for months. Herm Edwards said "You might as well go get a freshman guy and build your program.", which makes sense. Why take a chance on a portal guy when you can recruit a high school player you have talked a lot to, and can build your program with.

It's those "private reasons" where a potential transfer Coach may make or break his program.

Look even Joey Freshwater doesn’t dip Into that too much. That should be all the proof anyone needs to know the portal is potentially laden with toxic issues. Obviously not all of them but Edwards is right. Better to know a kid then load up on question marks.

Calm down. The vast majority of these guys are from deep into the depth chart. This is a situation where the Portal is good, it gives a chance for guys to move to a place where they can play and contribute. Wish them good luck and pour another whiskey drink and enjoy the evening.

I can understand that reasoning to want out but it is early. Still don't understand why coaches can leave in mid contract with no reprecussions but players leaving you sit a year. I completely understand the sit rule or players would jump every year but nothing is ever done to a coach...nothing.

I see where Arkansas and East Carolina are touting that they have found the Fountain of Youth, The Eureka of recruiting, The Pinnacle of returning to power...….yep both of them have 5 out of the portal. Yep, a grad transfer maybe but dipping in those waters reminds me of the old Western Movies where they find water after suffering through the dessert. Then they die because da water was not good and it poisoned their little arses.

I didn’t realize this until I saw the news of the transfer. Sumpter’s Mom and Dad are from West VA and he has close relatives there that are Mountaineer season ticket holders. Sumpter considers it a dream come true to play whet he calls home. Best wishes, see you on Sunday next year.

I watched a few WVU games last year, and I'm sure I'll watch a few more this year.
