So I went to the game tonight, along with about 200 other folks. I get that Carver isn't Indiana or TAMU, tonight's game was essentially us paying them to scrimmage against us. That said, there were some definite positives.
1) We won. Coach Scott Cross got his first of many wins as a TROJAN, it's gonna be fun to watch.
2) After shooting around 30% from the line in first half, we came out in the second and went 12 of 13, shooting (if I remember correctly) 73% from the line for the game.
3) We played hard. On the postgame show, Jerry commented that he likes to watch coach's body language during the game and that coach seemed to get more excited over our diving for loose balls than he was at our draining 3's (which we didn't do much of, there is no Wesley Person on this team right now). CSC agreed that he got excited over the "effort plays" because those indicated that the things stressed in practice were becoming ingrained into the player's game DNA. Some have commented that in recent games, the intensity fell off in the 2nd half, that didn't happen tonight.
4) I'm not sure what kind of knee injury he suffered that slowed him down and has kept him out of games so far, but true FR Tyrek Williams came off the bench tonight and ended up with 10 its. At 6'8" 260, he brings an inside presence we haven't had recently. He backed down the defender and put in a soft off the glass lay in three times and powered his way to the basket another. He is going to be a much needed presence inside. I watched South's big forward back and power his way to the basket for 40 minutes last year as they beat us in TROY and Williams has the ability to do the same thing to our opponents.
Though I'm not a big BB fan and don't understand it very well, I enjoy watching these games. I think by year's end, we will be surprising people. I said it before and I'll say it again, I don't know where we finish the year, but it won't be in last place.
