That's a good challenge for Cross & Co. I'm looking forward to seeing how they look against them.

That's how you get better...not by playing Ft Valley St and Goshen Christian or whatever that team was Cunningham scheduled.

We played ranked Kentucky,Florida State, Pitt, Arkansas, USC during Cunningham’s time. I’m sure this current team will play some lower tier teams as well. It’s just the way basketball scheduling works

It’s just the way basketball scheduling works You prove nothing nor improve as a team playing D2 schools, SWAC, NAIA, or National Christian College Association teams. Play the toughest teams you can OOC to get ready for conference play and come tourney time you are tested and know how to react. Pat Summitt adopted this philosophy and it worked wonders for her teams. I adopted this philosophy coaching travel softball. I took a young team with first time travel players and put them in tournaments over their head. We got run ruled the first two tourneys but by the third we were playing more competitive and by the end of the summer we held our own and beat a few good teams. Several of my girls got picked up by established upper teams and three went on to play college ball. Had I put us in lower tourneys we would never have improved the way we did. The parents were mad at first but my mid season they realized that by seeing pitching and top level play they got better quickly. Just my opinion but I've seen it work.

You know who Duke is playing in their second game of the year? Fort Valley State. Everyone does it. If Troy were to play the toughest teams for every OOC game this year a likely outcome could be that they lose every single game and have no confidence going into conference play. Sometimes you schedule winnable games to give your team that winning feeling.

You prove nothing beating inferior opponents unless you are #1 then technically everyone is inferior. Everyone does it yes but it proves nothing. Like I said just my opinion but I subscribe to the " you want to be the man, you got to beat the man "

Sometimes you schedule winnable games to give your team that winning feeling. I agree. Probably a better idea to start out with an easier schedule and play more beatable teams in the first couple of years. Cross's players need to gain confidence in winning, not destruction of morale by playing more games that are more than likely going to be losses. Playing the big name teams just to get us ready for conference play, is basically implying that we're just going to sacrifice wins for the sake of giving players experience against top talent. This past season, Lipscomb only played against 3 big programs. They didn't need a schedule full of big teams to get them prepared for conference play. They went 29-8, won the A-Sun easily, and made it to the NIT Finals (beating Davidson, NC State, and Wichita State). I don't think most of us would want to play Texas A&M, Ohio State, Clemson, and Florida all in one season like we used to in football. Why would we want basketball to do the same?
