All I heard was, "Waaaaa". He should have been around when we played Jack State on a regular basis. By the way...what is up with that big A** selfie on that article? Is that some sort of Glamour Shot?

I think some of you are being unduly harsh in responding to this student. Number one, just like some users here get admonished for singling out players, let's remember the author is a student too, young and idealistic.
Beyond that, the ultimate point I think he's (grasping) for is about the ever-increasing polarization in our society and the fact that we are getting to a point where even amongst one's countrymen, differences in opinion or ideology are seen as so stark that the other side is an alien "other" or enemy. That's perfectly exemplified by the people who talk about "a Hillary voter" and "a Trump voter" as though these are monolithic groups, rather than the reality which is that there are good and reasonable people who are supporting each candidate in good faith. I think his mistake is viewing a real subject of concern through a silly prism like a little figurative hate between sports teams. Ultimately he's accomplishing one of his "profession's" greatest goals in that I guarantee more people have talked about this Trop article than they do about most other articles.
Now do I agree with him about this? Absolutely not! Number one, while we are talking about "hate" the word is hardly being taken literally by any reasonable fan of either team. Rivalries add to the fun in football because they add more meaning to the game - they raise the stakes. I'm loving the fact that we have this rivalry going with South Alabama and I think it's going to be better every year. True, I see some people trashing the whole fanbase of the opposing school just like they used to do with UAB, but even that is fine and fun as long as we all know (and we all should know) that really the opposing fanbase has good and bad fans just like any large group of people. Rivalry games are also great because they are usually against schools that are fairly close to one another and therefore we get great crowds like last night.
I'm just saying we need to remember this author is a young person just like our student athletes and he wrote a fairly silly piece to get people talking. There's nothing in the article to indicate he is "liberal" or "unmanly" or much anything else other than a fan of the Trojans who is perhaps a little more sensitive than most of us here. If he genuinely is worried about #hateweek in its own right I think he should do a little more critical thinking about how it's all in good fun and is not exactly a threat to civil society, but that's it. Hopefully he is not this sensitive in his personal life, because people who come up privileged and then face a world that does not cater to them are going to get their feelings hurt every time. As Jay-Z and Annnie say, it's the hard knock life for me. Ideally some real world experience will teach him to pick his battles a little more carefully as where he wants to confront this cruel world. But dang, I used to write for my school paper, and sometimes these kids just spitball a hare-brained half of an idea to get people talking. Again, mission accomplished.
